Is it even possible to make a 4x4 Rancher street legal in upstate NY? (putnam county)

I want to drive past the police station waiting for them to pull me over and harass me just so I can rub the fact that I am breaking no laws in their face..

I would think that making a 4 wheel ATV street legal would cost more than double the cost of the ATV itself. Because of the safety requirements of 4 wheeled vehicals vs 2 wheels(motorcycles). You'd have to add crash bumbers, lights, turn signals, seat belts/air bags, ROPS, catalitic converter for the emmisions, muffler for the noise, and get it inspected and registered.
I other words, you'd be better off just going out and buying a jeep.
I know I wouldn't want to ride mine out on the interstate at 65(if it could go that fast) with tractor trailers on either side of me.

Not sure, most laws are local for that. Here in North Idaho all I had to do was put a mirror and street plates on it. To ride it at night I have installed a two way brake light, and am in the process of gathering some small, flush mount turn signals. It's nice to be able to ride it to the grocery store or local pub.

One thing you might be able to get away with is simply putting one of those orange reflectors the big triangle ones you see on farm equipment, on the back of the quad, thus making it a farm utility vehichle and you are just riding it down town for "supplies" Worked for me prior to getting the mirror on there.

This is truly a state by state issue. Some of the cool states like WY, ID and AZ make it pretty easy to be street legal. Others have no provision for it. Even here in WY most people don't know they can be street legal. A lot of peoploe are surprised when they learn that. Check with the DMV or local police.

BTW, I used to live in Mahopac, NY for a while. Nice area around there but I never found much good riding.

 

Go to the police station or city hall and ask if it is at all possible, certain places have certain regualtions

 

come to the dmv with holland and I when we go to register our quads. they'll tell u if its possible and what u need.
it takes a lotta money and a lotta time to set all that stuff up hehe your quad will be out of service for a year or 2.

just asked a cop here in newburgh about atv's and driving them around town. he told me as long as you only cut straight across and not down the street, your legal. so drive straight across the road in front of the police station and see what happens. just make sure you have permission from the land owners to be on those properties and the cops can't touch you. let us all know how it goes. i dont know about ny but in california their was a warrior that was steet leagal and he had to do some things to it but it looked cool i dont now to much about the four wheeler.
