Just curious as to how everyone cleans and oils their stock foam air filters. Anybody have any good tips or techniques?

I use mineral spirits, makes for quick work. Rinse it with water. Use a blow dryer (on LOW heat) to dry it out. Spray with foam filter oil. Works great for me.

First off you should always put oil on your filter, ALWAYS. Secondly you shouldn't use a hair dryer on them AT ALL. If you don't use any oil what are the dust particles going to stick to? They go right into your engine. If you use a hair dryer you can damage the glue that holds your filter together and your filter can come apart on you and let unfiltered air in. The way that I do it is I wash the filter in Dawn dishsoap untill it's clean and then rinse it out unill there is no soap left in it. Let it air dry overnight and then I put Maxima FFT Filter Oil on it. After you put the oil on it let the oil set in for about 15-20min and then put it on and go riding.

I second Need for speeds methods. If you get the oil in a quart and not sprayable, use a big zip lock bag and pour the oil in it, place the filter in it, and work it around thru the filter.

I remove the oil and major dirt with paint thinner, then I wash with dish soap and water, let dry overnight on top of our A/C vent then re-oil it with sticky foam filter oil so it doesnt drain off the foam, Then I greese the filter sealing edge for a air (dust) tight seal. And always rember to wipe out the air box/ inlet duct and plastic sealing edge on the airbox itself.
PS, just rode my XR and it really ran bad so I took a look at my XR's airbox and found that mice had eaten and packed the entire filter/air duct with nut shells and dog food.

I wash the filter out with mineral spirits, then soap and water...and let it dry. (which takes quite awhile.) Then spray with foam filter oil, inside and out, and squish it all around to ensure the entire filter has been coated. I also try and get the excess oil off which is really messy too. But I figure the engine is worth a little dedicated TLC!
