I need some help. Does anybody know what size wrenches are needed for the two huge axle nuts on a 400ex. I got my new axle in last night, and am ready to put it on. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check out www.motionpro.com under the tool/ATV axle section. It mentions a 41mm for the Honda.

Sorry, the 400ex axle nuts are MUCH larger then the wrench the are offering on motionpro. I just took mine off the other day and I believe they are 56mm and 42mm. Please do not quote me exactly on these numbers. I can give you a definite once I get home from work and refer to the manual. Buying a wrench this size is very costly, and the wrenches from Honda are like $60 each. I used a large adjustable and a pipe wrench with no slipping or stripping and it worked great!

if they are the same as the 300ex, and i believe they are, then a 1 3/4 open end wrench will fit perfect on the smaller nut and a 24 " adjustable wrench (i imagine a smaller size might fit too, although i doubt an 18 " would) fits on the bigger nut.

Sorry for the bad advice about MotionPro. I am confined to a bed right now so I was trying to get the info solely from my laptop. The info that follows is based on the 1999-2001 400ex service manual. You need a 56mm and 45mm lock nut wrench. It is listed in section 13-9 in the manual.

Hope this helps.

Try a monkey wrench. That is what I used on my R until I got an antifade hub. Just be gentle because the teeth can chew up the nut pretty bad.

Please, do not use a monkey/pipe wrench!!! It makes ugly gouges in the hardware, and I firmly believe they deform the nut, so it won't stay tight for you. I HATE buying an ATV that has been pipe wrenched, YUCK!

I bought some ElCheapo (China) jumbo sized open end adjustable (crecent) wrenches from Norhtern Hydraulics. They work great, and they adjust to fit all my and my wifes quads, and three wheelers. Our axle nuts NEVER come loose, I do use a little Blue Loctite on them.

BTW: The two wrenches I got cost less than $40 total. They are really cheap, but they work great.

That thread is over 20 years old and I am fairly sure they are on about the nuts that hold the disc on, and therefore, the whole axle assembly into the swinging arm.
