lol on our many mud runs when i lived back in the sticks , guys would bring their 450es's out there and sometimes they would not shift. once we diddt have anything accept a whooole lot of beer so we tilted the switch box thing to where the buttons were facing up and poured in a cold one. i started fizzing everwhere and cleaned it out, then the alcohol dried up and it was clean. it worked like a charm. try that , if your over 21 of course .

I recently bought a new 2001 450 ES and had problems with the ES from day one. I finally figured out that I had a dead cell in the battery. The dealer changed the battery and I've not had a problem since. Mine would do much of what you are describing, particularly after I stopped and tried to get it back in gear. I often got a symbol that looked like this: ----- where there was supposed to be a number or a letter. The battery didn't have enough power to shift the gear, so I would hear it spin but it wouldn't have enough power to actually make it shift. I would then use the hand shifter until I could get it in neutral, start the bike, and then it would work OK once the battery charged. Sometimes if the engine RPM's or speed is not appropriate for the gear, the machine will not let you make an inappropriate downshift or upshift.
