No, you're correct...the only gear selection that actually "locks" into place is Neutral. But, there should be a definite "parking space" for each gear selection. The shift handle is held in place in each of these "parking spaces" by the spring in the shaft of the shifter. The shaft is moved up and down by the release button which is also has a spring in it. In my situation, the button was sticking so that the shift handle was being held in the "open" position all the time. This allowed the shifter to float freely, and not engage any of the "parking spaces". It's really not as complicated as it sounds. This is how it was explained to me though.
Just pull the dust cover off of the release button, and check to see if the white plastic button underneath springs back when you push it in. If it does, then your problem probably lies elsewhere.

I bought a service manual and checked the linkage rod adjust limits. I am surprised that this thing was even going into gear. Both rods a and b were off by between 1/4 and 1/2 inch the books limits were +- .02 in. I readjusted the rods checked the shift lever button (good) and went for a ride. It shifted better and so far I have been unable to reproduce the jumping out of gear. When you spend this much for a atv you would think that it would be assembled correctly. I hope that this is the only thing I find wrong. These are assemled in the U.S. right? Other than this the ruby has been a great ride. Thanks for all of youre help.
