well it really depends on what your used to riding before the EX. if its somethin weaker the 400 will have some nice power for you. 1st-3rd gears are great and wheelie any time you want to. 4-5 are a little lame as the quad feels flat on top and it won't wheelie very easy, especially in 5th your really gonna have to fight it to come up. this can be cured with an exhaust system however and theres enough hop ups out there to get the 400 runnin really strong if you need it to.

Buy the Cannibal, it has gobs more power than the 400EX plus handles just as well. It also has all the new technology, such as electronic fuel injection, aluminum frame, etc. If you buy the 400EX, you will get your plastic blown off by all C'dales and you'll be kicking yourself for the purchase.

Ride one: I'm 6' 230lbs and had one for two years it was great. For $5600 you can't go wrong. I just traded it for a Cannondale Speed $7900 bucks if you got that kind of money than get a Cannondale.
My 400EX dyno tuned and White Bros E-series, air box mods would keep up with and be in front of a DS on trails. Open dry lake bed, no way. It's 90% rider 10% bike anyway.
How fast can you ride in the areas your talking about. Tight trails, your not using 5th gear anyway. Who does 50MPH wheelies any way.
