For support, less likely to break or twist your foot and ankles

I used to wear ankle high Rocky boots while riding. I was jumping a log once, and my foot got jammed between the log and the pegs. It hurt like the dickens for about two weeks. When I could walk on it again, I went straight to the store and bought two pair of real riding boots. They are a must, as most people will tell you.

Especially when you race, where there is the 100% chance of you wrecking sooner or later(in other words, where you WILL wreck). Wearing tennis shoes, or Doc Martins ( I'm guilty of that one ) will get your ankles broken sooner or later. The racing boots offer A LOT of protection. If you haven't ever worn them, try it. They won't flex.

If you jump your quad much at all, eventually you're foot will slip off your peg and your quad and back tire will run over your leg, damn that hurts!!! The moto boots give you a great deal of protection against that. Not only that but they really stick to the foot pegs and you have alot more confidence when you are riding, especially jumping. They are alot of money but sometimes you can find good deals on ebay. The bad thing about new boots, they are really stiff and take a while to break in, some worse than others with respect to that.

Plus they are alot more comfortable to ride in. I really like the stiff soles too.
Now when I ride with work boots or hiking boots I always feel kind of half dressed, like something is missing.
I went with a pair of MSR World Tour Evader boots. Not so stiff as a motor-X boot, and they have a hiking type sole instead of the one-way sole of MX boots.
Try them, you'll like them.

In my humble opinion get a pair of boots made for ATV riders. Like the MSR boots mentioned. The moto-x boots are a B!tch to walk around in. I know you're not supposed to walk around in them but sometimes you have to walk a little in between motos.

Exactly, some boots are made with a lug sole, for ATV riding. I have a pair of Oneal MX boots. They are extremely stiff. I bought a pair of Gaerne Explorers that are very comfortable. Sidi makes a boot called the Discovery that are very nice.
