<< i heard that the 400ex top speed (from dirt wheels or some magazine) that the top speed on the 400ex is around 70-74. is that right? >>

Nope, not unless it was in Neutral being towed by a LT500.

The speed that you just mentioned is Banshee territory and in stock form a 400ex won't touch a Banshee up top. I'm not saying that cause I own one, I'm saying that because I have seen it. Stock the 400 is in the 65mph range.

Now onto the 300ex....My buddies Warrior does about 61 and it is quite a bit faster than another friends 300ex. We have not speed tested the EX, but I would guess it is in the 57mph range (much like another user said).

I have also heard that the 300ex is about the same speed as the Yamaha Blaster and if that was the case you are looking at about 55mph.

Now I have never seen a 250ex run, but judging by that I would guess that you are in the 50mph range with that.

To gain 10mph on any 4 stroke 250cc atv is going to take some serious mods. I don't think a filter, jet kit, and full set of pipes are going to do it.

Being the size you are (and still growing if you are only 15) I would say that you wouldn't be happy on a 250ex if you are looking for a sport ATV.

I owned a Blaster when I was 13 and I only weighed 130lbs and it at times felt small to me. I can't imagine riding one now.

I guess it all depends on what you are looking to get out of a quad. If you want to reach the 60mph mark a Warrior will do, and then you could take a step up and get the 400ex. However, that goes back to your original comment about shaft drive and a clutch.

If you want sport, you are going to have a chain.

You have a couple of options if you REALLY need reverse. Buy a Warrior, their good machines. Or wait on Suzuki's new Z400.
Personally I never buy the first model year of anything.... Just look at the LT500 (1987), the Cannondale's (2001), and the Raptor (2001). The second year is most often updated and the weak points adressed.

So, I would buy the Warrior today and the Z400 next year. But Honda may come out with something better in the meantime and you are right back to square one..........................

I think you should go with the 300ex. you can make it go 60mph, it has reverse, good for trails (same with the 250ex and 400ex), and you WILL GROW OUT of it. IM very small for my age so it fits me pretty well.

yes the mojave has reverse and it is a great bike for the money. it tops out around 58 or 59 MPH and has a lot of low end. Also the 400EX tops out at about 67mph.

My friend has a mojave and he loves it through the trails. but then theres people that say the 400EX is really good for trails. I think if you choose between getting two it is the Mojave and 300EX(They both have reverse, go pretty fast, good for trails, and are VERY RELIABLE for what i have heard.)
