okay, i have my really bad bayou 185, and have decided to sell and buy a TRX250X but before i do, i wanna ask some questions.

1. Do you suppose i can get a decent one for around $1200???

2. Never ridden a sport quad, is it alot better than utility?

3. Which year is the best to look for?

4. Is it hard to ride?

5. Is there a better quad i can get for $1200, besides a damn blaster???

Please answer my questions, i have always been a fan of honda and am finally going with them. I just hope i can get one for my price.

Thanks

The only downfall that I know of is a weak second or third gear in the 1987 Honda 250X's.

1200 might find you a pretty beat up 250X.
You might wanna save up a few hundred more to get a good 1500, then
find one for sale for like 1800, then look at it... and offer your 1500 in cash and hope he takes.

good luck.

I know you may not want to but get a Blaster. For the price its a lot for fun then the 250X. It can be heavily modded including the brakes. I have several bikes and have to say that the blaster is one of my favorites. As far as how it compares to a 250X? My buddy has a 250X with about 1200 dollars worth of mods and I'd did about the same to my Blaster. Guess what No competition Drag, Track or Trail. My Blaster hands down smokes the 250X.

Seeing as he is coming off a bayou 185 I don't think he's really worried about smoking everyone. Get the X, I had one, they are really easy to ride, they hvae better brakes then a blaster, better suspension, handle better, more reliable, bigger so you won't grow out of it in a week.

$1200 is pretty cheap, like Mr350X said save up more money and buy a better condition X. Try and get and 88 or newer.

Good luck.

not trying to change your mind from geting a 250x you could use that 1200 you have(i am only saying this because i like atc's) and pick up a decent 350x that would dominate races against blasters. but the 350 is a hard to handle machine coming off of a bayou. this is just my oppinion.

Between me and my friends, we have owned 5 '87 250x's and have no problems with the tranny (this includes the 410). The one I have now, I bought for $1000. The last one I bought was a '92 for $1200. Both were in excellent shape. I could have picked one up a couple months ago, '87 in perfect, all stock condition for $750 w/title (I had no money at the time).
I haven't heard about the '87 tranny problem, but the only other differences in 87 and 88 is the '87 uses 4/110 front hubs and the 88 uses 4/144 (250r spacing). The '87 has replaceable ball joints. They were both gray/red.
'91 and '92 had a different crankcase breather routing, and they were red frame w/ blue and white plastic.
I love the 250x/300ex (300 is the same with electric start and slightly longer stroke). Small enough to flick around on trails, large enough to be stable on straight stretches.

All of the early '87 250X engines had a third gear problem. Honda issued an update for it "mid year" and fixed the affected early models that still belonged to the original owners.

I haven't seen an X with the third gear problem in nearly 10 years.

The frame clor varies with EVERY year model. I think Honda could never make up their mind......LOL
