Ok GC , u ask for it !!!
Let me just say I really do luv my ES Rancher ( 2001 )
But here it is …..Bought new in Nov of 2000 has 4000 miles on it today
But around 1500 miles replaced the rear shock ,,, now I here Progressive makes a preload setting one for it $139
the choke plunger is horrible on all machines …. I wish they would go back to the lever on the carb theory !!!!
like one guy said just leave it out ¾ out in the cold months, my plunger cable broke so no more choke for me .
I just prime it a couple of time and ,,,,, blmblmblmblmblm …
at 2100 miles major “ warrantee” work on the rear seals , swing arm and axle bearings
dust seals , oil seals , hub etc you get the picture !!!!! man those mud holes wreck havic !!!!
had my rear tire come off ( and pass me I might add ) while riding around 45 mph
thanks to the mechanic who forgot to put the cotter pins in the rear end ….
Probably didn’t crank it down to 60 lbs either …. Oh well always check your machines even after the dealer repairs em
Got the bearing, oil seal etc replaced again on the left side thanks to there handy work !!!!
Around 3500 miles a couple months ago OOPS again the darn tire came off ..
( I’ll say this it’s a 2x4 and I did put some 25”x12”x10” Gators on ,,,, hind sight the wgt may be playing a factor …)
so back to the dealer this time for a NEW axle stripped the threads clean ( $65 plus $90 to install, the 3 yr warrantee is over !!! ) …
so we just got back from the UP ( Michigan ) and things SEEM good !!!!
oh ya , my ES froze once .. had to use the manual override wrench !!!
and my recoil starter is shot …. Rear brake cable was fixed but froze up again ( cut cable )
I do have original brakes still, but I too did see there in need of a new set.
maybe its my riding style , lol ( my parents did tell me to be a product tester )
don’t worry Honda it takes ME LONGER to brake your stuff , lol
I’ve rolled this machine before, once head over heals , and it keeps coming back for MORE !!!
This Honda is a TONKA of ATV’s
2001 Rancher ES ( 4000 miles )
2000 Tralblazer HPD kit ( 1700 miles )
2003 Trailboss ( 200 miles )
1991 KX80 , don’t ask !!!

LogLeaper...holy crap....i sure hope it's your riding style causing all of this and not the bike!!..anyway, regarding your trouble with the recoil starter...what exactly is the problem, cause here is a warning..it is of poor design...mud and dirt can get in through the housing...it will eventually work its way past the seal and get into yer engine...voila, MAJOR TROUBLE....take it off, clean it up, check the seal, (it can be replaced)...there is also a permanent seal you can get, but you won't have any backup starter....

let's just say I do have a blast on my machine ...... .....
GC, regarding the recoil starter ..... I just noticed the problem last ride out..... was doing maintenance before and checked to see if my "silcon" was holding up ( under the handle )and it was wore loose so I pulled the recoil to see if any MUD was on the line ( and to "re" silicon it ) and it has no compression ,, was afraid it wasn't going to recoil back in but it did .
I do see highlifter sells a SEAL for this exact problem ... will look taking it apart and getting one ASAP !!! also i did just change the oil before heading to the UP and things looked normal "oil-wise" !!!! not gritty

Has anyone had any trouble with the 2004 Rancher ES? I bought one a few months back and have had all kinds of trouble with it getting hot locking the electric shift out. After many calls to Honda and getting the dealer to accept the trouble code it was given me, they seemed to figure it out. According to Honda 250ea. "Angle Sensors" where back ordered. I had to wait to get the part in. If 250 of these parts are back ordered on 2004 models looks like a recall potential to me. Mine was brand new 8 hours when it started acting up. Warranty covered it. Mine was also the 3rd one in two weeks our dealership had to change this part on do to troubles. In the mean time I bought a repair book from Honda and it is amazing what the blinking codes on the display will tell you. I wish the dealership would of knew this and saved me a big headache trying to reduplicate the problem. Anyway has anyone else had any trouble with the 2004 Ranchers Electric shift?
