Broke 400ex clutch?
Pretty sure the same thing just happened to the 2001 this past week at Hatfield McCoy. I was all set to replace the clutch cable, the usual culprit, but noticed it was fine. My girlfriend said she went to pull the clutch in and felt a snap. I rode it back to the trailer which was located about 10 miles away. I was able to shift without a clutch and it rode back just fine.
So, any special tools required for replacing this part?

Broke 400ex clutch?
Disassembled tonight and that was the problem. Hardest part was figuring out the broken off piece was still in the right crankcase cover. This prevented me from being able to pull the lever clutch out of the right crankcase cover. I had to tap the case on the Honda logo with a hammer to get this piece to fall out. I tried to work it out with a small screw driver but no luck.
Plan to order a spare gasket and pin clutch lifter for my spare parts inventory. By the way, there is a new part number since the original post - 22847-HN1-010.
List price is $8.82, Service Honda sells for $6.69.
No special tools are required.
Thanks for the responses.
