Default Shot an awsome rifle this weekend!!!

I was down at our local rifle range gettin all my deer rifles zeroed back in for the near deer season, and got to talkin to a man. I had meet him once before and had talked to him about rifles. He shoots tournaments, mostly 500 and 1000 yrd. He had a model 700 Remington in 308. As I was standing thier admiring his rifle, (I have a 700 and is my favorite rifle) he said here you shoot it. I sat down at a bench and dry fired it to get the feel of the trigger. It was a factory trigger set to 2.5 lbs, and very crisp. He started droppin rounds in the mag. I shot a 5 rd group that would fit under a nickle at 100yrds. Then he said" not bad for the first time to shoot this gun".

My factory 700 (270)will usually shoot a 3/4 inch group, but I have never shot a gun that would do what that rifle would. It was pretty fun to shoot such a rifle, and it has almost made me want to buy a target/varmit rifle.

Has anyone shot one of Remingtons new xp-100's. I was wondering how well they shot.

It's amazing what a quality gun and ammo that is tuned to it will do. That is one thing I love about the B.O.S.S. on my Browning. I can tune the rifle to factory ammo. It's an awsome feeling being able to shoot tight little groups.

He was using a Leupold 24x target scope, and custom bullets made here in Alabama. They were loaded in Laupa brass. He had the necks trimmed down so much on the brass that he said factory 308 ammo wouldnt chamber in it. The bullets were a hollow point match target.

He said he could take a wrench and take the barrel off, screw another barrel on and swap the bolt and have a 6mm BR.

His scope had preset markings for different ranges and zeros.

Yeah it was a pretty sick rifle. Im sure you could probably get a decent quad for what he has invested in this gun.

I think he is a retired USMC. and he teaches some marksmanship classes.

I got to shoot a tricked out AR 15 that was built for target match shooting. The guy that owned it had won the Mississippi state tournament 2 years in a row and was selling the rifle. I couldn't shoot it very well because the trigger was so sensitive. At 100 yards he could shoot 3 rounds and practically have one hole. The upper and lower receiver was polished and anodized blue and it had a fat polished barrel but it was very light.

Has anyone shot one of Remingtons XP-100s, or even thier heavy varmint rifles? If I were to buy a target rifle, I would also want to be able to hunt varmints with it also. I know the xp 100 is a single shot rifle, but that wouldnt matter much. I have seen some of these guns pretty reasonably priced.

Actually, the XP100 is a single shot bolt action pistol... I have fired the older one made back in the 60's and 70's, and it's a sweet shooter. Fires an oddball cartridge (.221 Fireball) but you can change barrels for different cartridges. I've been wanting one of the old XP100's for a year or so, but they're so darn expensive now - $750 seems to be the going rate for a clean one without scope. The new ones are sort of ugly looking.

Speaking of target shooting, I had a convert recently. A co worker who tricked out an AR15 and talked incessantly about it, brought it down to my farm. I have an old SP1 in stock condition, and wanted to see how much better his would shoot. Long before we got to that comparison, we thought we'd have some fun and shoot down a small tree that was in the range. About 6" trunk...

40 rounds of .223, and it was still standing. What the hey, I bring out my Springfield M1A, and sight slightly under our aim point. 10 rounds of FMJ .308, and it toppled over. My friend traded his AR15 off at a gun show two weeks later for a .308 chambered FAL copy.
