Default White EPI Secondary Spring won't fit a 1997 Prairie

I hate when that happens.

Ordered white secondary spring from EPI, tore everything down this weekend and went to install it. It doesn't fit. Diameter is too narrow and it won't fit over the fixed shieve. Called EPI this morning and talked to the technician. After being flabergasted, he finally realized that the first two model years for the Prairie are different and their spring won't fit. Have to send back. their spring fits models starting in 1999. Looks like I may have a classic here.

Wasn't a total loss. Cleaned the assemble and removed one of the 3 spacer washers, which tightened my belt up to 25mm. Should be good for a while but would still like to try a different spring that would have a bit better power transfer. Anyone know of a company that would make a similar spring as EPI's for the 1997 Model Prairie 400 4x4?

Good luck. EPI has the most kawasaki stuff. Did you look at buykawasaki.com for altitude kits?

I have a 1999 Prairie (thank goodness), and it has an adjustable spring. You put the spring's ends in different holes to make upshift later or earlier.

I will note that the 1997 and 1998 have different springs.

Yeah, I was afraid of that.

I appreciate the input and it appears that the only spring that Kawasaki carries is the stock spring. Looks like I'm stuck with the factory spring. I did gain a lot of success in thghtening the belt up by removing one of the spacer washers. I had three (2 @ 1.2mm and 1 @ .6mm). I removed the .6 mm and it helped bring the belt back to 25mm deflection, the lower end of the factory range of 25mm to 30mm.

Can you give me any insight as to how changing the setting holes on the secondary spring will affect the characteristics of the ATV? I put the factory spring back in the factory setting holes, which was A-1. There is an A, B, C in the bottom half of the driven pulley and a 1, 2 on the top half. There is also a third hole in the top half that isn't numbered???

Thanks for the help.
