can anybody tell me if valvoline multi-purpose grease will work to regrease the shaft that the secondary pulley goes onto.

If it's extreme pressure it should be fine. A hint: if the grease is synthetic make sure that any hint of rust on the shaft is cleaned off. Synthetic grease is a very poor rust proofer; rust will spread even when covered with syn. grease.
