suggestions on dial-a-jet for 650

Default suggestions on dial-a-jet for 650

I recently added several mods

hmf pipe
dg snorkle
orange and black spring
dg module

in addition to these i ordered a dial a jet kit from tpi but on the advice of my dealer did not install it,

I am getting ready to tackle this installation myself and would like any input anybody has like their likes and dislikes about the kit and any installation tips they learned through their own trial and error. Any and all comments are appreciated.

Oxygen installed the d-a-j in his P650, you may want to go to one of his post & PM him for his input.

I have them on mine,they are kind of a pain in the a$$ but they do work good.make sure you get the snorkle kit its a must.I mounted mine in the carb stacks inside the airbox,I ran the fuel lines through the side of the air box from the carbs and ran the snorkles through the front of the box up behind the guages with the other vent tubes,then sealed the holes.you still need a jet kit to get the machine close to where it needs to be the D-A-J just fine tunes it and adjusts for weather and altitude changes. hope this helps if you have any ?s shout.later...

Hey Megadav
I don't recommend the Dial-a-jets for the P650
#1 It's a complicated install, air and fuel lines have to go inside the airbox.
#2 No way to tell if they are working or not.
#3 It's easier to just rejet for high altitude riding, then you know it's right.
#4 Return them and get your money back.

I installed them because I was going riding in Colorado at 9000 to 13000ft
I rejeted to 132 and 138. and hoped I wouldn't have to rejet when I returned to TN.
Bike ran great in Colorado because it was jetted right to start with.
Bike ran lousy back home, stock Prairie beat me so bad, I was embassed.
Tried all mixture settings on dial-a-jets, Bike still ran lousy.
Removed dial-a-jet and installed stock jets, 138 142 Bike ran great.
Maybe there's a install trick I didn't know, but I won't use them again.
I am going back to Colorado and the Piaute Trail next year and I will just rejet.

thanx for all the input, i dont travel that much but I dont feel my machine is jetted properly (too rich) and I think in the back of my mind I was hoping the dial a jet would be the jetting magic bullet I need. I am not very knowledgeable about jetting so I guess I will have to work on that since it seems this dial a jet wont do it either. One question I still have, the reason my dealer advised against the d a j install was if i didnt like it removal is a pain due to all the drilling required to install, and the carb parts you then have to replace are expensive, any input????
I am considering trading up to a p700 so I'm not sure if I will go thru with this install anyway.

You have to drill and tap holes in the float bowls, the metal is sort of thin for this,
so you have to be careful, the holes in the airbox and rubber carb snouts are easy to fix. I left the fittings
in the float bowls when I removed the dial-a-jets and just sealed the plastic fuel lines leading
from them. There are better ways of dialing in your bike than dial-a-jets.

Megadave,

I love my dial a jets. Yes it was alittle hard to install but the results are great. If you don't notice any difference in your performance then they are not working correctly. But once you get them working they improve throttle response greatly.

The only way to tell if they are working is under load. At idle they don't work. The way I could tell if they were working is if they had a little gas moisture in the snorkels after each adjustment. To much it was rich and dry it was lean.

With each click on the dial a jet you should be able to tell if it is working by the seat of pants performance. If there are not any changes then you are probably to rich and have to jump down a jet or two. It works 2 to 3 jets sizes leaner than what you are normally running. I have mine set up all the way opened. It seems to work best with my mods.

If you need some help I would be glad to help out with install. I have a picture of my current setup on my page if you are interested. I am in the process of modifing a 2003 airbox set up with the dial a jets also.

Hope this helps!! If you want better performance you have to work at it and give the time.
