CARTMAN308, & DANGEROUS, are right... something is not right... if I had to guess, I'd say the wheels were mounted backwards, so that the offset would not be correct... this is actually a very easy mistake to make, especially if the tires were mounted backwards to begin with... some care must be used when mounting directional tires... if this is the case, you should be able to just switch the tire / wheels to the other side...
if your gas tank, & not just the gas tank shield, has a hole in it, expect an expensive fix... try ronayers for the cheapest replacement...

I too have 27 inch 589's on my stock rims. I have a P700, but there is plenty of room and no rubbing. Newbeatle is right with directional tires. My dealer is good and I have no complaints, but when I got home and looked at my tires (they loaded them into my car for me) the had them mounted wrong. I called and of course I was told the new guy did it. Anyway look into the previuos mentioned ideas. Your buddy should have plenty of room.
