Belt exploded!!!!!
#1
Today while I was riding down the road, a terrible noise came from under the belt cover, no warning light, no nothing, and the belt deflection was set. Sure enough when I took off the cover the belt was nothing but 1" pieces. Never heard of this one before on the forum. Just wondering if this happened to anybody else, and if it caused any other problems. I did notice that the primary clutch had a groove worn in it, does this have to be replaced along with the belt? If so is it possible to lathe the clutch faces like a rotor, cause I bet these things aren't cheap. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Crankdog, Alltoys has been able to machine his clutch faces. I imagine a lot of places can do it. Seems simple enough. Snowmobile shops do it all the time (or have it done somewhere else).
However, a certain amount of grooving is OK. You may decide that yours will still work with it.
I had a little groove at 450 miles (belt was slipping bad), but when I replaced my belt and set it too tight, the groove basically disappeared after 900 or so miles. The tight belt wore the pulley kindof straight and even. Strange, but good. That belt is still slightly tight.

Just lost another belt to explosion. It may have been on the edge of spec, but those 28” mudlites killed it. Started to squeal on take off after the tires and it didn’t take long. I re-shimmed it after I heard it making noise after I was done riding that day. It was to late. Brought it in to low side of spec and the next ride she went. It was showing signs of wear. That’s the second one to go while I was wide open. If you haven’t had this happen to you yet, it sure sounds like you just destroyed your ride.

I had mine explode at 2500 Km(1500 Miles) while I was full out on a flat dirt road. Was not impressed!!
had to walk about 5 miles to my truck. It went like yours; in 1inch peices and all the cords just wrapped inside the clutch (what a mess). They replaced it on warrenty because they had checkes it just the previous day and it had no signs of wear or slippage. Could not get an explanation from them as what caused this.

Happens once in a while, mostly due to heat build up. check your air intake and exchaust for the clutch, to make sure it isn't covered by the rubber around the steering column or under the seat.
I'm going to install a piece of aluminun around the top of my clutch cover. just for an extra safety measure, not sure the plastic cover would contain a piece of clutch, if when the belt let go it took the clutch out too, at 10,000 RPM's.

My brother in law had the same thing happen a week ago, doing about 60 km/h and it snapped into 1 inch pieces, hardest part was getting the cord unwrapped from the driven pully!! Belt was loose before hand though, very loose. Had to order a new sheath too as the bushing wore out and it was wobbly. Might want to check that yours fit tightly together Crankdog.
