Default Float Bowls

I am going to rejet my BF for some high altitude riding in Utah this weekend. I have not looked at the carbs on the BF closely and am wondering what is the best approach to remove the float bowls to get at the jets. Where are the bowls positioned on the carbs? (ie CVT side or pull start side...front/back of pistons or in the middle?) What do I have to remove to get at them? (I've already pulled the rear plug on it so I know how to get in there...I just don't want to have to pull that much plastic again if I don't have to.)

TIA
Brian

PS Am I going to hurt the engine is it runs a little lean while I test the new jet? The jets I am going to use are for 3900+ ft. and I am at about 2500. I will want to test the setup to make sure it works before I drive 5 hours to the ride. I know that lean is bad and I don't want to "injure" the motor while testing the new jets.

scoobybri, if your at 2500 ft and you are only going to 3900 ft. Its not worth a rejet, there isnt that much change, most people jet for above or below 4000 ft. So you might be doing all the work for nothing and end up with the same jets you started with. If you do rejet it wont hurt it to run a little lean for a short time, just no WOT for any length of time since your next size jet will probably be to lean. Not sure about the brutes carb location.

3900 ft is not the elevation that I am riding at. It's the lowest elevation that the next set of jets should be used at. I am going to be riding at 7000 to 9000+ ft. I just ripped my BF apart and I cannot see where you can change the jets without disassembling the engine to the point of "rebuild" The carbs are pointing at each other at a 45 degree angle with the bowls AGAINST each other between the carbs. Theres no way to get in there to remove the screws and jets without ripping the carbs out. And with 24 hours before I leave for the trip, I am not going to take a chance of screwing something up. I have a service manual coming in the next week. I'll wait...

I am just going to run REALLY rich this weekend and keep my fingers crossed that I don't foul a plug. The guys I am taking the trip with ride SP 700s and they don't rejet for the altitude.

Good luck on your trip. If bad comes to worse my dealer told me it would be $40 to rejet and take less than an hour. That might be worth it if your going on a trip. Have fun.

I went to Utah a couple of months ago with my Prairie, and we went to 10,000 feet. I have stock jetting, but it ran fine. I did notice a drop in power, but everything else was great. My Bayou even went with stock jetting, no problems.
