Default front differential fluid

Hi everyone. I am a new member to the forum. I purchased my first quad (2002 Prairie 650) about 5-6 months ago and have frequently visited the website. I think it's great. You can find out anything you want to know and then some. My question is about the front differential fluid. Exactly how much does it hold and what is the easiest way to change it? There isn't much of an angle to pour at the filler cap. Do you need to turn it on its side? Any help would be greatly appreciated. By the way, I sure do love my quad. What stress relief!

Welcome and congrats on the purchase. My neighbor has the same bike and he loves it. As for fluid amount for the front, I can tell you that my Brute Force takes a little under a quart. I'm pretty sure that you fill it until you can see fluid resting at the BOTTOM thread in the filler opening. Double-check that, but that should be it. Don't forget too that the front diff uses regular motor oil as in the same stuff you put in the motor. I just use my 10w40 Kawa chem motor oil....

As for filling it, the easiest way for me to do mine is to use a funnel with a valve and long flexible tube on it. I bought one at Wal-Mart for about $5 bucks. It's way easier to use one of these because the filler opening is small and you can only dump oin a little at a time or it will make a mess. It takes a while to fill it so be patient. The valve is great because you can control flow as opposed to a regular funnel that just dumps it in there. Make sure after filling it you trake a quick spin and then re-check it.

No, no need to turn the bike on it's side!

Check this website out, Nyroc is the MAN when it comes to the Prairie ------ > atv.dnsalias.com

Good Luck,

Mike

No, you don't turn it on it's side. A long spout funnel will suffice. I don't have a 650, but my 300 only holds 4-5 ounces. Not much.

410ml as per the service manual but I can only get about 350ml into mine. Be patient it takes about 10-15 min to fill. After your first ride check it again and top up if necessary.

I used the spout from my gas can to fill it, it's the flexible type that seals tight when pulled out.

And don't ever use Hypoid gear oil. You may see some gear damage, especially the spider gear/shaft seizing.
