Default VDI Beta testing News

Today I was able to put the Copperhead Beta unit to the test. Ran about an hour each on my P650 and P700. My Beta unit is set up with two performance maps, map one with 34 degrees advance (equal to the Dyna), and map two with 37 degrees advance for high octane gas. Temperature was 55 degrees during all the testing today.

I ran the P650 with map one. The P650 has 26in Mudlights on ITP Type 4 wheels, NYROC exhaust mod, TwinAir filter, EPI black secondary spring, EPI maroon primary spring, stock weights, Amsoil 0-40 synthetic ATV oil, and regular 87 octane gas. Start up was very quick and easy, and throttle response was very good. From a dead stop on grass or blacktop, front wheels lift right up with throttle only, no pulling back on the handlebars or setting back. I had so much fun riding wheelies, that all my neighbors came out to watch! I made several top end runs with both the stock CDI and the Copperhead. Gained 3mph (speedometer reading) with the Copperhead, top speed 63mph with the 26in Mudlights shaking me to death. There is a definite gain in mid to high end pull, does not flatten out so much at 50mph, just keeps climbing to the top.

The P700 is set up for drag racing only. Overall weight has been lowered by 40lbs, engine brake has been removed, lowered solid rear strut, lowered front end with about 1 1/2 inches of travel, stock tires with ice screws in the rear, on stock wheels, Dyna CDI, HMF Penland Pro full system exhaust, UNI air filter, Dalton plain/purple secondary spring, Dalton orange/blue primary spring, Dalton DPK 58 gram weights, jetted 142 front / 145 rear, stock needles, polished slides, vacuum springs trimmed 1/2 in., Amsoil 0-40 synthetic ATV oil, 93 octane gas with NOS brand racing octane booster. On map one it ran very well, easy start up, great throttle response, wheelied very easy from a dead stop or rolling start. It was a little difficult to wheelie on the black top because it wanted to smoke the tires instead of hooking up! The Dyna did not smoke the tires, just pulled the front end up on the black top. Top speed was the same as with the Dyna, 69-70mph on the speedometer, for several runs in a row. I am sure it got to the top faster with the Copperhead by checking my position on the road when top end was reached, witch I attribute to the mid to high end power. On map two, I lost 1mph on top end, and everything else seemed to be about the same as map one. Won't know if map two is quicker on the bottom and mid range until I make some timed runs.

I will be making some stopwatch runs on a dirt drag strip tomorrow with the P700, and will post my results after that.

1stQuad....Man, I'm glad to see somebody finally putting up some info on VDI cdi in this forum! I don't think many riders know that it's coming out next month (or whenever you guys get done testing).

On your P650 testing, I thought map one was the same as the oem cdi timing curve, which would be for novice riders, kids, etc. Is that right? Doesn't sound right, cause it performed much better than stock cdi. I'm confused about what map one is. Maybe you or VDI could post an answer to that.

Are you going to put high octane in the P650 and try out map two in it? What would high octane mean, 87 or 91 or higher? I can relate more to your P650 than your highly modded P700, since both of my Prairies are almost stock.

Looking forward to your results! I really want one of these things, cause there's a Polaris guy in my group that talks entirely too much, bashing my bike and praising his.

kawiyowee, My Beta was programed that way at my request. When you get a production model, it will have a stock map for map one and a performance map for map two. If you get the software and memory pod, you will be able to reprogram the maps to what ever you want, and also select or unselect certain other features such as reverse limiter, limp mode and so on. I don't think higher octane fuel will make any difference on the P650, from past experience. I raced the P650 last year with the Dyna cdi, and the higher octane gas made no difference in my timed runs, but with my P700 with the Dyna cdi in it, went from 5.7sec to 5.6sec in 300ft drags.

Because of 1stquad's racing requirements, we loaded his with the two performance maps.

One thing the Beta testing has revealed is that our calibration is a little off. I do believe we have it calibrated 2 degrees advanced (so both maps have an extra 2 degrees on it).

We'll take that out in the next Beta software upgrade and the production runs.

Just as 1stquad mentioned, I'm not 100% convinced on the 87/91 octane power gains on these machines. What I do know is 91 burns slower, so you need more advance to get the power out of it.

We're doing more testing, but at the end of the day, our results may be the horsepower from 34 degrees and 87 octane may equal the horsepower from 37 degrees and 91 octane. More testing is required to finalize those results though.

My 2 cents...
I'd be very surprised if the higher octane on a stock quad made any difference regardless of the amount of ignition timing applied. Heck, I now run higher comp pistons (11:1) and I still don't notice any difference with the higher octane fuel (but I run 93octane pump gas anyway...always have). I've always heard that you don't really need higher octane fuels (like racing fuel) unless you go with a really hi comp piston (like 12.5:1 or more).

In any case, I want to THANK YOU in advance for doing all this testing/tweaking...sounds like you will have a very good product once its all done.

Happy trails...

Did you do any more testing? Yours and alltoys info have been real informative, thought maybe you were going to do some more with your beta unit.

Our testing is on going. We're in the process of tweaking the timign curves for more HP.

So far, all the Beta guys are really happy. They're announcing easier cold starts (EFI like), more mid band punch, cooler engine temperatures, and cleaner plugs (proper burn on them). So, at the end of the day, we're doing a better job of ensuring all the fuel going into the engine is burnt completely, and used to put the power to the ground.

Wires....ditto mikeyboyesq congrats in taking your time tweaking the new cdi. It's got to be killing you guys to keep screwing with it and not being able to start selling. Better you than all of us playing the trading game with you and sending the cdi's back and forth cause they weren't quite ready. There will come a time, though, when you say.....ok, that's it, we could mess around with this thing forever, let's go.

You're a small company, right? The little guys are who I like to deal with, better service and the company is not owned by our friends in Cuckamonga, Egypt for example.

You have my email address, let me know when you want a credit card #.

I have been very busy while I wait for the software and cable, but as soon as I get it I will have some more info. It's been fun playing with it as it is!

That was our concern. We didn't want to release an incomplete product.

The only issue the Beta's had was our mistake of using a waste spark on the Kawi. Just doesn't work on it. After that was fixed, the ONLY issue the Beta guys returned was a slight idle flutter (which has been taken care of).

We are just waiting for the PCB's to come back from the board house (they are due Dec. 3).

We are small, and we pride ourselves on being extremely customer service orientated, and very responsive to our customers concerns.

We'll be in touch very soon.
