2-20 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE
Periodic Maintenance Procedures
Rear Final Gear Case Oil Change
. Warm up the oil by running the vehicle so that the oil will pick up any
sediment and drain easily. Then stop the vehicle.
. Park the vehicle so that it is level, both side-to-side and front-to-rear.
. Place an oil pan beneath the rear final gear case and remove the
drain plug [A].
When draining or filling the final gear case, be careful that no
oil gets on the tire or rim because oil will deteriorate the tire.
Clean off any oil that inadvertently gets on them with a highflash
point solvent.
. After the oil has completely drained out, install the drain plug with a
new aluminum gasket.
Torque - Oil Drain Plug: 20 Nm (2.0 kgm, 14 ftlb)
. Fill the final gear case up to the bottom of filler opening with the oil
specified below.Rear Final Gear Case Oil
Type: MOBIL Fluid 424 or Kawa Chem Gear & Wet Brake Oil
(CITGO TRANSGARD TRACTOR HYDRAULIC FLUID)
Capacity: 900 mL (0.95 US qt)
. Be sure the O-ring is in place.
Torque - Oil Filler Cap [b]: 29 Nm (3.0 kgm, 22 ftlb)

DO NOT use anything but a 10w-40 JASO MA oil in these front ends!

I wanted to do the same thing as you, ie., put in a good gear oil. However, the clutch system that regulates your locking differential requires friction to work properly. Using a highly friction modified automobile oil (basically an non-motorcycle specific oil you might pick up somewhere would fall into this category) can and will cause degradation of the ability of those clutch packs to grab like they should. So will gear oil.

I keep seeing 'tards on boards complaining that their lever is tight and adjusted properly but they can't get their front differential to lock. Came to find out in every case they either put a "slick" auto type of oil in them, or a GL-5 gear oil. Just stick with JASO MA 10w-40, maybe even 20w-50 if you ride in lots of hot temps and long durations. But I would definitely NOT use either gear oil or automotive 10w-40.

Auto Zone . I run Valvoline 10w-40 4-stroke motorcycle oil. It is JASO MA , API SG compliant.. And it's only about 3.30/quart. You can use this in the engine and the front end.
