I have a 2005 Prairie 700. It will not go forward....it will go in reverse, but when you try to go forward it grinds and clunks. When I shift it into forward I can feel it go into gear, but as soon as you put any throttle to it, it pops out and starts making the grinding noise.....any ideas....Thanks

Check the gear shifter linkage...it probably just needs to be adjusted.

Good luck and happy trails...

Thanks for the reply, but it was not just a linkage problem ... the trans had a major malfunction,

the High / lo gear in the trans. has lugs on it that lock into another gear when you shift into lo gear. Some how the lugs broke off and went through the trans damaging it severely, and also a piece that was flying around, went up and broke out a chunk of one of my piston skirts.

The story I get from my son, is that it was working when he parked it after he went mud bogging. But when I went to ride it a few days later, it was backed into my barn, and when I put it into forward it would not move.

My theory... if he is telling me the truth ....and that's a big if ..... is that when he was bogging, he got stuck and was rocking the quad back and forth pretty hard, and this is when the gear broke, but somehow it got locked into high, and that is how he drove it home and then backed it into the barn, at this time I suspect the lugs fell out and that is why when I went to drive it, it wouldn't go ..... how's that for a theory.

Sounds like a good theory...this is the first time I've ever heard of a major problem inside the transmission. I hope you are able to get it fixed soon...it sounds EXPENSIVE to repair. I wonder if they have to split the cases to get inside the transmission?

Happy trails...

The lug you are referring to is probably one of the 5 teeth from the engagement dog gear. Things like that usually break when trying to shift gear at high rpm when stuck. Mud bogging can do lots of damage on quads.

Well, it was the gear with the five teeth on it that broke and went through the trans and engine. I've got two pages of parts that had to be replaced. $2900..ouch.

When I got it home, I went to unload it off the trailer, (in the pouring rain), it wouldn't start, no crank or anything, tried a couple of times but nothing, then smoke started coming up from under the seat, ripped the seat off to find all my ground wires burning. Got the fire out (should have let it burn). Took it back to the dealer, over an hour away, on the way, the seat flew off and bounced down the road getting all ripped up. WAS NOT MY DAY !!!
They then had it for another week to rewire it, they said they found a ground problem, I figure they left a ground off, but I have no proof, they also had to fix the choke that was stuck on. The cable was routed wrong causing it to bind not allowing the choke to come off, At least they fixed it for free this time.

what a horror story...

I would have reported it stolen LOL insurance time...

and then to dump 3 grand into it....

no way I would have had to eat that loss.. Sell on Ebay and use the proceeds plus the 3 grand i was gonna spend on a new prairie...
