Prairie 400 4x4 no compression.
i have a 99 400 4x4 automatic that had no compression. i adjusted the intake valves but do not have the tool that measures how much to adjust it...so now i have to much compression and can not use the recoil to turn it over.(starter died)
where can i get that tool and what is it called?
i am taking th whole engine off tomorrow and going to rebuild it and bore it because i know it needs it badly.
the last owners dogged t badly.
any advice would be helpful.
also will the 320 downloaded manual on the main page work with the 400?

kool.thanks.
i am going to buy the service/shop book tomorrow.
i took it to the shop 2 weeks ago and got it out 2 days ago and they did not tell me anything.
the shop told me they can tell me the reason it is not working instead he give me 6 different reasons and said only thing he can do was take it completly apart. he said it would take 1 hour to take the plastic off and 3 hours to tear it down and another 2 hours to see what is wrong then put the part/parts in then put it back together.
so i was looking at the price range from 400$ to 2000$.
so i paid him his 70$ (all he did was pull the recoil rope and charger me for an hour) and got her out.
so i am gonna rebuild it myself. the transmission is in great shape just will not keep compression.

How can you have too much compression? That dont make sense. Like too much fun or money... You can't have too much compression unless you have a broken camshaft or something really weird going on. You either tightened the valve adjuster so much that the piston ran into the valve or you just aren't strong enough to pull the rope. I remember one time I wasn't strong enough to pull the rope, but it wasn't really that... It was a piece of screwdriver tip lodged in the cam chain and the engine just would not move. Took the tip out n it ran great.
If you have 0 compression, you have to LOOSEN the valve adjuster until there is a gap of some sort on all valves and check it again. If you have a good amount of gap and still don't have compression then you have a hole in your piston, a bent valve, or a broken rod.

Yeah if it stopped turning after you did a valve adjustment, something is wrong there. My P400 is not hard at all to pull with the pull rope and never has been since new. To the point of maybe thinking it was down on compression.....
When you get the feeler guage, a must for any turning of the valve screws, you will probably have to bend it at a 90 to get it in there correctly. The opening for the adjustment can be tricky to fit the feelers in. Just make sure you get a good bend and dont warp the end of the tool you intend to use.
I would also fix the starter first. Troubleshooting a bike that wont start with the pull rope would drive me up the wall.
