2002 kawasaki kvf 300 4x4 belt
Has anyone changed a belt on this machine? Do i have to take the clutch off to change. Or is there enough slack in the belt to get off? This is a 2002 and i don't know if the belt has been changed by the previous owner. Any help apreciated. I am going to order a repair manual, but would like to change the belt as i think i have a belt smell after running the machine.

Go to "U tube" and search "belt change" and you will get a video instruction of changing a belt. Don't matter what type or make of ATV or even snowmobile all belts have the same procedure for changing.
Here is one Changing a ATV belt.

You will need to take the right footrest off, along with the brake pedal to get to the belt cover. You can take the belt off of the pulleys by rolling it off of the driven pulley without taking anything else off. If you put the same belt back on, make sure you don't reverse it. It should always run the same direction.
Measure the widest part of the belt to see if it is worn out. Minimum width is 1.13". The belt "deflection" should be 1"-1.2" max. To measure the belt deflection, place a straight edge of some sort across the top of the belt from the driven to the drive pulleys. Push down hard on the belt and measure the distance between the top of the belt and the lower edge of your straight edge. To adjust, remove shims between the driven clutch sheaves. In my experience, I've had to take all the shims out most of the time. However, if you take too many out and the belt is too tight, it will clank the gears when you shift from neutral and also want to creep at idle.
Hope that helps...
