2004 Prarie 700 - Good Starter Quad?
Hi,
I have been looking for a quad with the intention of using it for plowing & using it for playing. Really its for playing but I need to convince the wife. I am looking at a 2004 700 with a winch (warn 2500) with 360 miles on it, which seems new enough to me.
My experience is with a Yamaha ATC (three wheeler) I think it was a 250 or 350 (it was a long time ago - maybe 15-20 years at least). I have a Jeep wrangler that I use offroad. My goal is to ride the quad in a similar manner (slow & steady). I dont need the power of a 700cc but thats what a friend is selling & the price seems to be a little high for my budget (thats life).
I also ride a 2004 Kawasaki ZX-10R (1000cc sportbike) & I know how quickly you can get hurt if your not paying attention.
Anyway, I figured i would ask & see what the groups opinion is on it.
Is the Prarie a good solid quad?
I would love to see a comparison between the 2004 & 2009 versions to see what is missing.
I know it doesnt have IRS - in the land of jeeps a solid axle is more reliable & less prone to failure. I dont mind a rougher ride of a solid axle as long as its able to last.
Thanks,
Rich

I have the exact same quad - 2004 P700.
That's my favorite among what I have and that's the best most versatile and reliable quad I've ever had. Kawi stopped making P700 in 07. The only thing you need to be careful is how use/maintain CVT system. There isn't much difference in riding comfort between IRS and SRA which I have both. I get more fun riding out of SRA - power sliding. And like you said less thing to go wrong.
BTW, I ride 08 10R and I know what you mean by getting in trouble...

Rich,
Only mods I have on my 700 are Warn 2500 winch, 26" Mudzilla tires/rims (only for winter use), and Coolant temp gauge. I don't have any power mods. I use it mainly for ranch work and exploration use (so rather slow riding) in my neck of the woods. One time I took it to Pauite trail (total 1500 miles long!, if added all) in Utah for 7-day riding trip, and it gave me no troulble at all when other quads were breaking dow left and right - there were 20 of us. The 700 is my choice of ride if I am to go on a long distance trip far away from hom. Becaus I know it will bring me back home.
No, I am not familiar with ZX-10R.net.
I traded in my tired '06 10R to get a new'08 earlier this year, and the powerband difference is phenomenal. The midrange punch is illegally strong if you know what I mean.
