Default 86 KLF300 Timing Problem

The cam sprocket skipped a tooth knocking out the timing on my 86 KLF300. Found the lock pin on the rear of the cam sprocket worn - got a new sprocket.

Following the factory manual I'm redoing the timing

- crankcase rotor at the T mark
- cam sprocket pointed upwards aligned with the KLF300 mark at the top.

The piston is at the bottom of the cylinder when on the T mark and the cam sprocket is pointed up at the KLF300 mark - shouldn't the piston be at the top of the cylinder?

When I turn the engine over it blows out the carb port and sucks in on the intake port!

Dude I am busting my but on a 86 Bayou 300 now myself but am 1 step ahead of I think...with the flywheel on turned ccw, stop at the "T" and the piston should be at tdc,....if you look into cylinder,(spark plug hole) or by removing the head and it is not at tdc, then you probably sheared your woodruff key on the flywheel...in which case you will need to order the puller and key and reinstall the flywheel, and you might have bent your intake valve...I have that corrected all that now and I am leaking oil out my head gasket...I am trying to figure out the oil leak now

Thanks, I was thinking the same thing, the piston should be up at TDC not down. I'm going to pull the cover and check the flywheel and crank.

no problem keep me statused if ya want and ..i will do the same...I reinstalled my head this evening and had success....here is what I learned.there are 2 dowel pins, make sure they are in the cylinder head(bottom piece) not the top head...it helps to gently accurately place the head without moving the o rings or gasket...also taking a guess here but I think oil travels up the 2 left side head bolts and down the drain in back with the other o-ring, anyway the orings are very important . i got it back together and it starts and idles great....but.....when I give it gas it bogs down..... back to the book
