Default 1988 klf 220 problems

Hi,
I have a 1988 klf 220 . My atv will only start off of the pull cord . The starter works great but the atv will not start with it . Also my atv idle's great but when you give the throttle some gas it quits immediately ! Any advice would be greatly appreciated !! P.S. Have cleaned and checked the carb i think it is more in the electrical end of it

the electrical stuff will have no effect on the engine running if the engine is already started.
second thing to note.
the engine can only be started in neutral by the electric start system.
so you may have an electrical issue in the starting circuit..
get a test light and trace the wires back to the starting solenoid. make sure your getting continuity from the push button on back .

make sure all your fuses are good and not burnt or corroded.. check for frayed wires etc etc..

try activating the solenoid manually get a pair of jumper wires from the battery and probe the 2 points on the solenoid with ground and 12v+ "make sure your atv is in neutral please!!" if not you may be in for a surprise !

if the solenoid does not crank the engine by manually activating it then you have a bad solenoid.. replace it and you should be good to go.
if it does crank the engine over then you have now eliminated that part as faulty. continue from that point on forward until you find the problem.
the starting system is very simple once you trace it all down.. it only consist of a few wires.

now as to giving it gas and it dyeing out.. that's a tall tail sign of a dirty carb.. no matter how good you clean one sometimes there just shot.. and your machine is from 1988.. might be time for a more modern upgrade.

try cleaning it again.. get a small drill bit set and make sure all the debris is out of the jets.

the above steps should help you out.
