Default won't stay running w/o solenoid engaged

got a 94-95ish i think, kawasaki bayou klf220a for my son last week, dencent shape but be sitting for quit some time.. did the normal stuff, drained the tank, fresh fuel, pulled and cleaned the carb, cleaned the plug, battery charger hooked up.. have been able to get it to fire up many times, but it seems that it will not stay running when i get it to fire then remove the screw driver from crossing the solenoid.. waiting on a new solenoid but can jump it... seems like the system is depending on the current from the battery charger and solenoid to keep it running..
would this be a bad stator possibly, not working or working enough to charge the system to keep it running? thanks for any ideas..
