Default 97 Prairie 400 "stripping" gears?

Hey Guys. I'm working on a project 97 Prairie 400. Things are going pretty good! Just got it together and runs strong, but I have a question regarding the bevel gear.

When I get on it, it sounds like it's "stripping" gears. I've heard this can be due to the bevel gear having an incorrect backlash. I didn't have this problem initially. I had to add a 1mm shim to get my belt deflection correct, then it started doing this. It doesn't seem that should affect it though. Any thoughts. Also, When I attached the final drive case to the engine, I used sealant, but no hard gasket. It sealed up great, but do you think the width of that gasket could affect the backlash or mesh of the teeth?

Thanks,

Wayne

I would think w/o a gasket the fit would be a little tighter and rather than stripping, it would be a grinding because they are too tight/close. Does it still move when the sound happens or does it feel like a slipping clutch would feel on a normal clutched motorcycle?

Thanks for the response! Those were my thoughts as well (grinding stripping). When it makes that noise, it is under hard acceleration. It "strips" briefly, like for about a half second, then catches. During that half second it doesn't pull, as if the clutch were pulled in on a dirt bike. So as well as making the noise, something is definitely out of mesh somewhere.

Thanks,
