Default Starter not working.

Ok so it rained yesterday and after trick or treating with the kiddos I decided to do some riding on the trails in my woods. Well is was pretty wet and muddy (fun!). After we got done I parked the wheeler and turned the key off. Then I decided to wash off the mud while it was still wet. So I turned the key on, pushed the start button and flipped it into reverse (noticing that the reverse sensor light didn't glow) and pull it up over to the hose.

I washed it off and then went inside. After about an hour later went back out to put it in the back yard and the electric start wouldn't work. Nor the neutral sensor light.

Could this be just from the starter and sensors getting wet? I'm hoping that after it sits under the awning, out of the rain, for a day or two (going hunting) it will act right again. Oh and the pull start still works by the way.

I guess I could have pull a wire loose. But like I said the electric start still worked after I was done. It's after I sprayed off the plastics (lightly as to not splash a bunch of water on to the hot motor) and waited an hour to put it up that it didn't work.

I mean I didn't even hear the starter click at all. : (

ya you probably got something wet.. when you are done washing it you should always start it and let it run for about 5 min to dry things out.

Ah. I didn't get water on the motor when I 'washed' it. But I guess enough water got on the motor from riding that it did pretty much the same thing. Hopefully it just soaked the connections with mudd/water. If so I'll clean up the connections and apply some dielectric grease for next time!

what i found is its usually the handlebar controls that get the water in them. I have 3 different quads and looked at all the switches and none of them really are sealed to stop water

I think it's my neutral and reverse sensor. When in neutral with the key on, the light isn't always on (intermittent). When it is on, it will click in gear ans start in neutral. When it isn't working, nothing. So, going to have to find out where that sensor is and check it out. Hopefully I don't have to take the friggin side cover off.

Found exploded view and neutral sensor part.

Looks like it's just right behind the clutch assembly cover on the left side of the motor. Will the oil spill out if I take that cover off?

Okay so I don't think the rack is the rear rack. I guess they made aftermarket front racks for that model back in the day or something... Anyway. That neutral switch has two contacts on it (one for neutral and one for reverse). They were completely covered in grease/dirt, so it wouldn't ground out. I just cleaned them off really good (to where it was gold, not black lol) and viola! Works like a champ now!
