I was stuck in some mud/water about 10" deep today. As I was slowly spinning the tires trying to get out the 4wd kept going to 2wd, then to 4wd, over and over. Then I grapped the locking handle and held it. Same thing happened over and over. High, low, and reverse same thing. Any ideas.

Hey Jeffoxsr, I don't know what would cause the 4wd to do that. I would take it back to your dealer and have then check it out 'cause it should be covered under warranty and if you fool with it you may void the warranty.

I have not experienced that problem so I hope you get it figured out.

jefffoxsr, did you fix this problem? I'm getting it too. I was in mud as high as the tires and it kept swiching in and out of 4x4. Any ideas?

Did the indicator light say it was in 4x4 when it kept going back and fourth? If not:
One thing I noticed with mine is that I could feel it engage in 4x4 but still have the 2x4 light on. Then when I tried to climb out the front wheels would stop pulling all the sudden then start and stop again. I found out I have to get the 4x4 light to come on (by driving back and forth a couple of feet) then the front wheels would stay engaged.

I experienced something similar too. Like an idiot, I was trying to cross some trick mud down by the river in 2WD, when the trick mud really started to get deep, I switched to 4wd just as I was getting stuck. The 4wd light never came on and the fronts would spin then stop and do it again. I thought what the hell is going on! Two weeks later at Eli, I buried the damn thing real bad, but had it in 4wd well before I got to the hole and all 4 wheels kept on spinning. The conclusion I came to is that when I was in the trick mud the 4wd never had a chance to fully engage and that is why the front tires would stop spinning. My 650 has never done it since then, so that is why I think it was driver error.

Mine was the same situation where I was playing in mud in 2wd when I should have been in 4wd. Then I get stuck before I put it in 4wd. I don't think it had a chance to fully engage.

On my 650 you have to roll about ten feet after you flip the switch before the four wheel drive will lock in, but I have had success geting the four wheel drive to lock in by just turning the handle bars back and forth while stuck in the mud with two wheel drive.
