Mojave: Better to jet richer or buy K&N/Dynojet kit?
#1
I want to hop up my Mojave and I'm wondering if the K&N/Dynojet kits are an improvement or even any different from just buying the optional larger jets from Kawasaki? I've seen the Dynojet kits advertised for $40 to $50 and that seems like a lot of money simply for jets.

In MY opinion, hence the word opinion. The first thing is a mandatory upgrade in the filter department. Actually to do it right you should add the free flowing filter, exhaust and jet kit all at once. But, you need a filter for sure. What good is more fuel with out more air? The benefit of the K&N/Dyno Jet kit is that you increase power in the entire power band and not just on top. The kit for the Mojave includes a new needle as well as new main jets. The needle is adjustable and this alows you to add more fuel in the midrange circuit of your carb by lowering the cir-clip it raises the needle(again you need more air from an after market filter). Unless there's a way to adjust the stock needle that I'm not aware of? The main jets are said to only effect the 3/4 and up throttle so you can understand what I mean by saying what I have said. The Idle circuit is adjusted merely by the screw on the front bottom of your carb. Again, with a free flowing filter you can turn this out about 1/4-1/2 turn and gain a little on the bottom end.

Don't have time to talk but.
Jet-kits have many different combinations.
If you look at the after market needle thier will be a different taper, or a different over all diameter.
On the 92 thru 96 ninja 1100 they did not replace the stock needle and the kit came with aluminnum washers to stick under the stalk needle.
I have to go for now and I can say the washers can be purchased from dyno-jet and others but please do your self a favor, Get the complete kit.

I was under the assumtion that the dynojet kit simply altered the way lean stock jetting therefore creating more power. It sounds like it is a bit more involved than that so the kit doesn't seem like such a bad deal. I'm going to skip on the K&N filter however. The UNI filter site had some interesting info about paper and gauze filters that addressed every benefit the K&N site touted.
I plan to go with a Dynojet kit, new UNI filter and possibly a pipe if I can find one that isn't too loud. My brother had a White Bros. or Supertrapp pipe on a '94 Mojave several years ago and it was obscenely loud. I don't want to ride something that pisses people off all the time.

Yes the jet kits are much more involved than you have been informed.
As for what filter, to each his own. Just remember any statistics that come from dyno-jet will be with a K&N filter in it.
As for the pipe, dirt wheels had a white bros mojave they tested.
It was a nice bike, They used the dyno-jet with K&N air filter, also they used a white bros pipe I want to say an e series wich they said (this is dirt wheels talking now) The white bros put out 93dB compare to an 86dB of a stalk pipe.
They also liked the durablue one inch wheel spacers and what they did for the overall handling.
Hope you have fun and if your looking for that dirt wheels article I got it off of the dirt wheels web site. I also printed the article and when I get back to work I'll see if I still have it and I'll e-mail it to you.

This is the sight I read about the white bros mojave.
And I also heard about how loud the DG pipe is.

I would go with the individual jets-a much cheaper solution. Also for exhaust-get the Supertrapp IDS2 quiet series. It has a low rumble and is not too loud-even w/o any discs in-open ended. I also have a UNI filter-very good-easy install and maintain.

I also have an 01 mojave and I installed a dynojet kit and was very impressed with the results. It was a simple install with no questions. My throttle response greatly improved and acceleration slightly improved. I bought mine through rocky mountain atv dor $44 and I think it was a great buy. Save the hassle of taking the carb off a million times because its running rich or running lean so on. buy the kit.
