Well, Just some additional information for ya all. Had a GREAT time wheeling last weekend. EXCEPT that the dang belt started chirpin during take offs or when under a load. My 650 has 290 miles on it. SOOO took it into the dealership on tuesday. According to the service writer, he called Kawi and they told him there have been NUMEROUS complaints about this. He stated that they would go ahead and order new sheeves for my machine and replace the belt and shim it proper. He stated that the belt had worn a groove in the sheeve. Seems hard to believe that a rubber belt would wear a groove in a steel sheeve that quick. I have been riding snowmobiles for 20 years and never had a belt wear a groove in a sheeve. Now, im a little peeved that i didnt have the machine this weekend, but I am happy that they are willing to do this without a fight from me. I do hope this solves the problem once and for all. I do usually do my own work on my wheelers but since it is under warranty I havent played with it much. I will give an update when I get it back from the dealer.

The pulleys are aluminum. The center of the driven pulley is steel, but for the most part, the belt is in contact with aluminum.

I think all of us are in agreement here. The belts are crap. I just tore my clutch apart and reshimmed it. I had about 1.25 inches of deflection in my belt and it was beginning to squawk on takeoff. My clutch had a 1.4 mm shim in it so I took that one out and replaced it with a 0.6 mm shim. My deflection is now right on the money and there is no squawking, for now. When Gates gets us a belt, I'm buying one for sure. BTW, I only have 520kms on my 650.

370 miles on mine, and it is "squawking" once on take off. Guess I'll dive under the clutch cover for a look........

Hey guys. I just got my Erlandson Performance catalog and was looking through it. They have a secondary clutch spring in there that is designed to provide less belt slippage on the 650. It is also recommended to help maintain peak rpm on 650s with oversize tires and provides more backshift. It is called the BLACK KSS3 SPRING and it costs $24.95. I think I'm gonna order one and give it a whirl.

They also have primary clutch springs too. There are six different ones that are all color coded. A guy should be able to fine tune these clutches real sweet once Gates gets us a belt. Each one of the primary springs sells for $19.95

i have the black secondary spring, and the red primary spring. that black spring makes a HUGE difference. there is NO slippage with 28" tires even in gumbo mud.

I couldn't find the BLACK KSS3 secondary spring on their website, but it is in their catalog. You can reach them at 218-829-6036.

I for one would greatly appreciate to know how you make out with the KSS3 EPI spring. Please give us a full report on how well it works! I can see EPI getting a lot of orders for this spring! ......MJSTX

Well, My Magnum is 3 years old now, and is still on the orginal belt, and is ridin ever day.
It would seem to me that these belts on the 650's should last longer than they are. But it sounds to me like they are out of adjustment either right from the factory, or as the machine gets broken in. So maybe a solution to making your belts last a little longer, and to delay the costly replacement of a belt, is to check the tranny, and belt to make sure everything is ok and adjusted properly. Maybe out of the factory everything is ok, but once break in starts, and the belt wears, it needs slight adjustments to keep it working properly.
