650 valve adjustment
#1
Hello All
I just had my first set of swing arm bearings replaced.Crunch Crack you know the sound.
I have 2100 km on the buggy. I asked my dealer to adjust the valves while the bike was in the shop.
He told me that there was no need???
I couldn't really believe em.
What is the concensus out there ? Did most of you get the valves done? What would the downside be of not doing them??
Two strokes have been my bag before buying the 650 so I am just gettin myself up to speed on the 4 strokes ins and outs.

I checked mine with 1500 km and they were dead on. (Rex told me the same thing but I wanted to see for myself ). That was right before I smashed the 650; you must have seen it, it was sitting right next to your machine when you were waiting for the swingarm bearings. The downside to valve clearance is that if valves get too tight it will cause them to burn.

6 out of 8 of mine were right on the money at 1000 miles. 2 of them were tight. It does run better with them adjusted. I had a difficult time with the feeler gage in the tight little valve cover opening. My friends griz started running like crap, and valve adjustment fixed it (the griz needs adjustment a lot more than a 650, no matter what the manual says).
Most 650's are fine without the adjustment for many miles, but a small few have needed it really bad. Some dealers tell you that you don't need it. Well, you "probably" don't need it yet. Starting difficulty seems to be a big tipoff to needing valve adjustment.

Thanks Scott & Nyroc.
Yes thats what Rex told me.
How did you make out with your swing arm?
I helped Rex take the brake sys out and was very impressed w Kawis interior set up. Looked like it will last along time before it needs work.On yor machine I mean. What was the final bill?
Mine had a little crack on it where the shaft boot goes on ,must have hit something before the new skid plate I guess.Rex put some JB Weld on it as it wasn't in a stress point.

I am getting ready to take my P650 to the dealer for it's first service. The dealer told me that adjusting the valves was part of it and wanted to charge me $235 for the first service. I told him that wasn't in the owner's manual and that I didn't want it done. He sounded pissed and said that it really ought to be done. I said if you want to check something you can check the belt deflection. He said that was not necessary unless I hear squeeling.
Bottom line, I am going to let them change the fluids and oil filter, check adjustment on the cables, and check the tension on nuts and bolts.
Can anyone think of anything else that I need to have done? I will be doing all service in the future. Just want to have the dealer look it over one more time before I start in. I have 27" gators and black spring on the way!

Tell the dealer it's been proven that the belts are too loose when the machines roll out the factory door. If it's not set correctly, the belt will wear too quickly as will the clutch sheaves. And the dealer will blame you for abusing the machine when you do complain of a squealing belt.

I agree. I think I'm going to do the belt deflection myself, and not pay his mechanic the $.
It's a shame when you call their service mgr and you seem to know more about your quad than he does! With the knowledge and insite I've gathered from following several forums, I don't need the dealership much at all.
