650 belt yelp
#3
If it has JUST started "YELPING", you can most likely get away with using a shim stack that is .5MM less than what is in there now. If it has made noise for more than 200 miles or so, you'll need to go thru the tensioning process. Be sure to use a good strain gauge, or fish scale to accurately check your belt's deflection. I didn't think that I needed a "fish scale", and got mine WAY tight, the first time I adjusted mine. It will become routine, once you've done it.
GOOD LUCK!!!!!!
NYROC--- Did you get the Outlaw jpegs ??????? BTW- How long has" Nyroc's Knowledge Base" been in existence?

I only posted one of the radial outlaw pics, I didn't think everybody wanted the closeups. Sometimes I like to see the 650 with different tires, so I have been showing 650's with various different ones.
Nyroc's knowledge base? It has been evolving for 6 months or so. I have been making minor improvements on a gradual basis. It is cake to use. My PC's at work and at home stay logged in (via a cookie), each tech tip has an edit button for me to make changes and correct misspellings right from the web browser. There are also buttons for upload file, rename, delete, and create new.
I have been thinking about killing the sections for yamaha, honda, and suzuki. I have also thought about trying to get kawasaki to spponsor me. I just haven't had time to spruce it up enough to try to ask kawasaki to take a look at it.
If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

"deflection adjustment" is another way of saying "adjusting belt"
You see how loose belts are by pushing on them halfway between the pulleys. The distance that the belt sags is called deflection. The tighter, the less deflection.
It would be incredibly difficult (mechanically, scientifically and financially) to actually measure the belt tension. So, they made it easier for us to check and adjust it just by the deflection.

he changed the belt once and the old belt seemed reallly tight and the new seems just as tight!

Grizzkiller,
A belt that "seams" properly adjusted may in fact be way out of spec. You have to measure the deflection like shown on Nyrock's webpage or in your manual. Unless you are some sort of magician/mechanic, you should use the proper tools to actually measure the deflection. I know that I can not tell the difference between 22 and 25mm of deflection by pushing down on the belt with my thumb. If the belt deflection is too great, you need to remove some of the shim thickness in the driven clutch. A slight squeal at idle in gear is ok. A slight squeal at takeoff means the belt deflection is too great and you are prematurely wearing parts. Good luck in getting to know the Prairie a little better!
