Default Prairie 650

Hi Folks:
I just got my 650 last friday and its a treat! Having trouble with start up though. It wants to quit on choke and when I give it some gas it cuts out also. Any ideas on what i'am doing wrong? P.S. go easy on me, this is my first ATV (traded in a snowmobile for it) P.S.S. No snow up here.

Once mine's going I turn my choke off before giving it gas. These guys are tougher to get going. are you lacking power or smell gas when yours is going? I'm thinking plug(s) could be faulty.

Its got lots of power once it warms up and I don't smell gas. We have had a lot of cold weather here this week. ( single digits) Would that make a differance?

Your engine is new & tight.
Try full choke, after it starts, turn choke to half way & give it a little gas, to baby it along. After a few minutes of this, it should run off choke & idle.
Sometimes you may have to give a little of gas with full choke on to start.
If it keeps doing it, you may want to put in some fresh plugs & do NOT leave your gas petcock on when your 650 is parked & not being used.
These 650's can be a bear at times to get warmed up when its really cold, without a doubt they can be coldddd-blooded.

Single digits LOL I'm dreaming for one of those days... we are hanging around -20?C... Does yours have a primer I know the canadian vesions has em. It's located on the right side of the bike next to the idle ****.

You need to turn up your idle adjustment(clockwise). My quad was hard to start and required throttle to keep it going until I did this, and it sometimes required a blip of throttle to shift between forward and neutral/reverse. Once I turned up the idle, the bike starts very easily (turns over 2 to 3 times at most), and holds an idle without any throttle input. Some have tried this and had it fix their problem, and some have gone a step further to richen the carb mixtures with success as well. Good luck. In any case, you should not have a hard time starting the quad, or have to help it along with throttle input.

Thanks for all the information guys, like I said "this is my first ATV". I'am glad I found this forum.
Does the 650 tend to flood if you don't shut the gas petcock off? The sled I traded for this Prairie did that, filled the block once. Again, thanks for the info guys. Bob Saice

My throttle came set a little low from the factory as well.
