Anybody out there have any idea how often the P650 fan should come on when riding? My brother-in-law and I have identical 2003 P650's and when riding together, my fan will come on after a hard ride and stay on for a short time, then go off. It also will come on for 20-30 seconds when I shut down. My brother-in-law's very rarely comes on. Coolant levels are fine on both machines and nothing is blocking the radiator. Any comments on whether or not either machine has a problem? Both run great and have been pushed pretty hard. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif[/img]

 

Everyone will tell you that the fan comes on quite often, this is normal. Somebody in the forum even said they were more concerned if their fan didn't come on. Make sure to keep the rad clean and as long as you don't see the overheat indicator flashing you should be fine.

However, if someone ever wished to alter the amount that their 650 fan runs, the following things can reduce it:

Coolant additives - They decrease bubble size in the coolant and increase heat transfer capacity of coolant. 50/50 can cool more than 60% AF/40% H20

Jetting - Stock 650's often come running lean. Lean makes engines run hot.

A small amount of muffler wrap on head pipe just where it is near the rad.

A 3" to 4" hole in each inner fender shield to allow more air flow while going slow.


BTW, My fan doesn't run nearly as often with proper needle adjusment (it was lean from factory). That is all I ever did. I may do the muffler wrap eventually.

 

FYI just in case anyone is interested, there is a fan assembly for the P650 on ebay right now.

I found that sometimes even though the rads might look clean there is some mud inside the air holes and you need to remove plastic panel beside the rad and clean with hose or low pressure nozzel. This really makes big difference .
