Bad Belt?
#1
I took my bike into the dealer on Tuesday, and everything checked out fine except my belt. i have 45hrs, and a touch over 300miles on my bike he said that i burnt up the belt. so he ordered a new one to put on. at 250miles i put in my black spring and checked the belt, as well as the deflection it was all fine. the belt looked brand new when i installed the spring. i do not beleive that i could totally destroy in 50miles. i have no problems with the belt, it did slip a few times, but other than that it was fine. have any of you guys heard of a belt going bad this quick? i do not want to replace a belt every 300 miles, or do you think he is pulling my chain? i am really interested in seeing my old belt too. what do you guys think?

I would definetely want to see the belt. It seems to me that unless the deflection was way off, there is no way it should have been worn out. If the deflection was that far off, however, I've got to believe you would have known it! Something does not sound right.

I have 10 hours on my 03 650 and just installed the black spring last Saturday. My 10 hours of run time consisted of easy break in, some snow riding (10") and mostly roads with a few wheelies just for fun. I also ran in low range when appropriate and have stock tires. I would not consider any of the riding I did in those 10 hours to be belt abusive conditions. The inside of my housing had signs of belt wear black rubber dust and the belt was very loose. The tranny has worked perfectly since new with no squealing or probs and I had no complaints but wanted the black spring anyway. When I took the driven clutch apart, it had two spacers in it a thicker silver colored one and a thinner gold colored one. I took out the thicker and left in the thinner gold washer. After measuring the deflection it appeared to be at .92" and I left it at that. I have no squealing and the clutch operates very well. My belt didn't look worn or bad and I have absolutely no grooves in any of the pulleys.
My 2 cents is that the new bikes are being shipped with excessively loose belts and even if you don't want the black spring, all the new bikes should be inspected for a too loose belt condition. After you go through the effort of pulling out the secondary driven clutch to pull the spacer out, it does seem silly to not put the black spring in at that time though.

I have 10 hrs. on my 03 650. I put in the black spring Tuesday, my belt was excessively loose. Mine had 2 shims, I removed the thicker one. After putting it back together with the black spring and just one shim it was still loose. Don't know what is wrong. I also lost power and speed after installing the spring.

Here's my story, I ran my 2002 for 700 miles and had dealer adjust deflection, he said it was just out of spec (too loose), he removed ALL the shim's from the driven clutch and sent me on my way, at about 1900 miles the belt was chirping when I gave it gas, keep in mind this is BEFORE I put the epi spring's in, he could not adjust it anymore since there were no more shim's BUT the belt was still in spec after all these miles, just glazed, I have the extended warranty, and he called Kaw, they put a new belt on free, since it was still in spec but slipping, I now have the spring's which should make this belt last alot longer. I also ride in low range whenever I am riding less than 25 mph, This is VERY important to belt life....My point is if the stock belt lasted 2000 miles with only one adjustment, then with the spring's in it now, this belt should last at least 2500-3000 miles.I SMELL A RAT, make the dealer show you that belt.......
