Default Needle adjustment

Just tore into my carbs to try and get rid of the hesitation problem I am having. I took the needle out to shim and was wondering if it requires a special washer, or if they can be made. I was going to shim them up between .04-.05". Any feedback would be appreciated, also I am assuming the washers go under the head of the needle and not on top of it, is this correct. I have the muff and airbox mod with a twin air filter and #145r and #142f jets. Please give me some feedback and if I need special washers, where can I get some.

try #4 brass washers, about .020 thick..this amounts to 1/2 step in a needle position on a adjustable needle..yes the washers go under the clip, somethimes I have just pushed out the clip and put the washer on, then put the clip back on, other times I pushed the needle out od the button & slid a washer under it. washers shuld be available at a ace hardware store, home depot, or good hardware store, or you can go to a bike shop & get carb shims..they are pretty standard..
