Default V-Force doesn't do good in sand

I put some more time on the 700 today on a track and some 660' sand drags against my brothers Z-400 with a full WB system and lid removed. We lined them up, and off we went. At 300', I was about 1/2 a lenth ahead, but right after that, he started pulling away, so at the end of 660', his Z beat me by 2 lenths. We raced 4 times, and the results were the same. It felt like at around 300' that it started to level off, or not pull as much. But no matter what I did, a quad with a motor allmost 1/2 the size, beat me. But the sand was soft. Then we timed them. The Z did the 300' in 6.05, and the 660' in 10.69. The 700 did the 300' in 6.4, and the 660' in 11.09.

Now onto the track. We did a 5 lap time race, and after 5 laps, the Z did it in 7:04.98, and the 700 did it in 7:05.37. So on the track, the 700 did do well. On the sharp corners, the tires slid a little to much, and on a 4' jump, the front shocks bottom out. They were on the 2nd softest, but when I put it up a notch, it didn't bottom out. The 700 felt very comfy on the track, and I'm sure with more time, the laps will be faster. So Friday will be the big test, against my Predator. Stay tuned.

Well, if your 700 had its stock tires on, I would expect it to do poorly in the sand. A quad that big/heavy will need some good paddles to perform to its full potential in the sand. It comes with Holeshot tires doesn't it?? They are notorious for being a bad tire in the sand.

The Z also had stock tires, but they do better in the sand then the holeshots. But I thought the extra 300cc would make up the difference.

I saw a vforce run the same time as you at the sand drags with paddles. I know it's like my polaris the stock clutch setup isn't the best for drag racing. There is lots of tuning that can be done that will help. Plus the weight will play a factor in the sand as well.

A friend of mine has a KFX400 and we raced in the sand with stock tires. The KFX had a pipe and filter though.

I was pretty surprised that he hung on and actually took a quad lead at the end of the drag.

The next trip (Winchester) the KFX had paddles an my V had etremes and the race wasn't even close.

Paddles make an enormous difference on this machine. Team paddles up with a few aftermarkets and you'll have a machine you will love.

I think Holeshots would be about the worst tire for sand. Last night I stopped by a Kawasaki dealer and got to talking about the V-Force. The guy who owns the place said he knows someone who has a V-Force with paddle tires on it - said it made a huge difference at Silver Lake.

I'm sure the tires have a lot to blame for the out come. But when you race your brother on a atv with 300 less cc, and in front of co-workers, they don't want to hear excuses. All I heard today at work was, a little 400 spanked a my 700. So you can say, I couldn't say much.

I know how that teasing goes, we do a lot of that at our shop. It's all in good humor - I'm sure you'll never hear the end of it. I don't know how much sand you have in New Hampshire, maybe you don't really need a set of paddles if you only see a little sand. If you want a knobbie tire that does pretty good in sand then you may want to try radials like on your brother's atv. I know the radials on my 400EX do surprisingly well in sand, especially when you let a lot of air out of them (4 PSI).

The teasing is harsh at times, but just come back and beat him. All you would have to do is get paddles.

We don't have enough sand here to justify paddles. My job site that I'm putting a 99 lot subdivision just happens to be sand. He knows on harder surfaces, I would win. But that doesn't stop the, I beat your 700.
