Kymco Mongoose 90R parked-and now no spark?
#1
Ok peeps.... Braintrust time. I rode my daughter's Kymco ATV 2 months ago. Put it in the shed in the back and let it sit on the trickle charger. Went to start it today.... Wouldn't start. Fuel preserver was in it. Pulled the plug.... No spark, but was wet from fuel. Also tried a new plug and grounded it with the same results. Checked all the wire connections and everything looks clean and good to go. Coil is within specs. Battery is charging to perfect voltage. Thoughts? What the hell would have changed in that time frame just sitting there? I'm thinking corrosion somewhere on a wire. Got a service manual and I don't have a way to test the CDI (no specs). I have a tether/plunger type kill switch, and I don't get a spark with it in or out, however the engine will turn over even with it out????? Does that just kill the spark, or do they usually stop the starter from turning over as well? It is the same ATV, essentially, as the Kawasaki KFX90 and Suzuki 90.

You can't test CDIs on quads. All you can do is check all the wires going in, and if they test OK but there is no voltage out when spun on the starter (on the wire to coil,) you have a faulty CDI. Some bikes are wired so the starter is locked out via the kill switch, most are not. Go through the tests in the help diagnose stator sticky, in the Chinese quad engine section on here.

Thanks...I have come to the conclusion that I am going to have to take off the bodywork and test every little wire in the loom for conductivity. I mean....can a CDI go just for sitting in a shed? I have the correct resistance for the stator (aka-Pulsar coil....115Mohms) and coil, but I will do what you suggested as well. Wish I had a good source for a new CDI though. Googling the part number on the current one leads me nowhere (30400-PTA7-900). I wouldnt mind buying one just to have as a spare anyways if it ended up not being that. Do you know if any other CDI will work on these machines? There are 8 pins, but only 4 wires from the machine....plus 1 in the corner that is for God knows what which is separate from the others.

LT80 coil/cdi's ohm at 170+/- 20% I'd bet the Kymco's would be similar.
Maybe try disconnecting the tether switch. The plunger type tethers can fail.
FYI: Not that it matters but Suzuki doesn't use Kymco's. Kaw and Arctic cat do.

Thanks man, I have a service manual and it supposedly covers my model year (2014). I forget what the specs were off the top of my head, but I know that the 115 was within range. I did disconnect the tether switch and tried both grounding the 2 leads and also keeping it open...albeit with a crappy piece of wire. I will have to retry that again. Thanks!

I was able to test the tether safety switch for conductivity and it is working properly. I should be getting a new coil soon in the mail, and will get a new plug specific to this machine. Next Saturday I'm stripping down the quad to test all the connections.
