Hi and thanks for all the useful info on this forum. I'm a practical chap but have absolutely no experience with bikes or these machines and I am just trying to resurrect this kids quad as a lockdown project with my step son to teach him practical things. It has sat neglected for several years and we have replaced battery, perished fuel lines etc so far. However it does not start and i found lying beside it a black square box with 4 wires coming out of the bottom and one blue wire coming out of the top. I now believe this to be the starter ignition and am trying to work out how to fit it back on the quad. The multi wire end has a connector and it fits to the connector on the wiring that is sitting idly beside the battery so I am hoping that is correct and not a coincidence that it fits. But where does the blue wire coming out the other end attach to? It has no connector on it. Does it go straight to the negative side of the battery? Hoping someone can help so that my step son can enjoy the satisfaction of seeing a project through to the end. Many thanks.
Is there a wiring diagram in the book? That looks like a remote kill switch box to me, if so you would be better off without it, but may need to jump some wires to make the bike work without it. Blue wire almost certainly won't be earth, may even be an ariel wire. There should be some reference to it in the book, if it is a remote kill box.
Many thanks for the reply Merryman. Ah so that would explain why the black box was not attached and why the connector on the bike had a looped wire in the other end of the connector per photo below I take it?
Wiring diagram also attached but I confess it is double dutch to me. Also attached is a pic of a round solenoid/transformer type item connected to the wiring at engine end - any idea what this is called and could it be that which need replacing to get the thing to start?
Appreciate the help. connector with looped wiring which was attached to the other end of the wiring connector Thinking this is a solenoid or transformer of some kind but struggling to get it off to have a proper look and replace it
Right, well the round thing is almost certainly the solenoid or "starting relay" as the wiring diagram calls it. To be frank, if you can't read a wiring diagram you are better off letting someone who can, do that part of getting the bike to go. The red wire from fuse goes to ign switch. When on, pos from red goes to Gr (whatever colour that is) wire, to starter button. Press button and positive goes down Yellow/Red thin wire to solenoid. Other solenoid thin wire LW (whatever colour that is) goes to another relay which is fired by the "R handle switch" (probably the brake switch). This is the negative side of the solenoid, and the R Handle switch wire also connects to that remote.
