Default 1st quad for a big kid

Looking for a ATV for my Son. He just turned 9 last week but is 5' 1" tall and 105 lbs. I am 6' 8" 260 lbs (and ride a Kawasaki KFX 700) so his size does not surprize me. Problem is, what ATV to get a kid that big with absolutely no riding skills what so ever. He has never ridden anything with a motor in it and is a bit timid by nature. Not afraid to try new things just not a real go getter.

What should I be looking at to get him a proper fitting machine that will haul his weight around yet fit well with his skill level ( which is none, zero, zip)?

I think you should get him something like a 250ex or z250. There both just as good. They both have throttle limiters to stop him from going to fast. My first quad was a 250 ozark and i got used to it quick and upgraded to a z250 so i could get a sport quad. What would he be riding, around the yard or trails, etc.

I agree! The auto clutch's (meaning that there is no hand clutch, you just keep pulling up/pushing down to change gears) on the Z-250/Ozark (same motor) are awsome.I have a 93 LT230E (auto clutch) runs great and been a good inbetween quad for both of my boys upgrading from the LT80's.
IMO you should check out the Honda Recon. Same as the others, having the auto clutch, but you have the electric shift option. You can have auto clutch and you shift OR pushbutton shift. (I'm not 100% sure, but I think the elec shift can be by pushbutton or fully auto). It's 250cc.
I'm considering a new quad for my youngest. He don't get along w/hand clutch. I'm getting either the 250 Recon or 350 Rancher in the elec shift. The Suz has been good. But Honda's are bulletproof. I did look at the Ozark/Z-250. The one thing I don't like on our LT230 is the linkage from the shifter to the motor. It gets sloppy and you have to pick your foot up 6" to shift it. I see the O/Z has linkage similiar.
