Purchasing Eton 90cc Viper..Need opinions and advice
#12
I bought my 8yr. old a 2004 viper 90 and she loves it.
Does not get to ride a whole lot, so the only problem is
keeping the battery charged. I paid around $1900 for it.

I've got two 90 e-tons...the only problem I've had is the cable on the auto choke gets stuck...then the lever no longer operates the choke...so if your having problems that is most likley the issue. Both of mine do it..I just get the WD and use a plier to work the cable a bit and it works fine again. We ride some really hard trails so they get knocked around a lot..just have to tighten up sterring and such no and then. Great little quads! Just check your cable as the lever is moved back in, if it's not working correctly it will loop out a bit...

We bought one for my 7 year old boy last Christmas. Great Bike!!! We paid $1800. I'm picking up another for my 5 yr old that thinks he's 15 on Saturday. One year newer (2004), same price...$1800.

We bought my 10 year old son an 03 Viper 90 & it's been great! It has a lot of time out in the dunes at Glamis, as well as a lot of desert riding under it's wheels.
One thing that is ultimately a "for sure" problem, will be the stock exhaust. It WILL break where the pipe bolts to the engine. There's only 2 mounting points for it. (the engine & one way at the back) The torque of the motor twists the pipe slightly every time it's stated & every time that throttle is applied. Gradually that softens the metal at the head & it snaps loose. You can probably make it back to camp, but if you can tow it, all the better.
There's a couple of simple solutions, or preventative things that can be done.
1st) If you're going to keep the stock exhaust on it, reinforce the weld from the beggining. Don't wait for it to break.
2nd) Get a rubber "gromit" to fit between the rear mount on the pipe & frame. This allows just enough give for the pipe to move with the engine. The factory should do this on every one of them!
3rd) If it breaks, have it re-welded! We were fortunate to have a welder available out in Glamis. & it only cost us 20 minutes & $20 bucks!
Last) Buy an aftermarket pipe. After MUCH searching, I found one that we really like for under $200.00. Call Lakes Motorsports at (248) 674-0663. Mie is the guy that helped me. He was great. If you go with thier pipe, & keep the stock air box, you won't need to re-jet the carb. It takes about 10 minutes to swap them out. You need to undo the front fender mount from the frame, & the plastic side cover. That's all. If you do decide to upgrade to a K & N or similar air filter, drop in a 110 main jet & you're golden! (I'd do it! It's cheap & simple.
Another must is to change the "Rollers" in the tranny. ($15.00) I'm no mechanic & it was EASY. If you do change the rollers, do yourself a favor & buy an "easy out" stripped screw remover bit for your drill, & 10 new 10 mm hardened steel replacement screws. I stripped 1/2 of the screw heads trying to remove them.
A few messages below, Zeppelinn mentions the "Green wire" on the black box, underneath the cowl. That's the "REV Limiter wire". If you clip it, you'll gain a bit more top end. Nothing more. My son has run it wide open with that wire cut across El Mirage dry lake bed & it didn't come close to over revving. But it did go faster! There's more in there to protect it, but I don't know what it is.
It's a well built, stylish little machine, that's a ton of fun in bone stock form. Drop about $200.00 more into it, & it's enough to scare you as a parent watching your child FLY by & roost dirt all over you as they do! It'll also run circles around a Suzuki LT 80 set up the same way! Hehehe...
Are your eyes tired yet from reading all of this? ...Good, cuz mine are from staring at the keybord! (I gotta learn to type some day! LOL!)
I hope this helped.
Be SAFE!
