Lt80 questions.

Has anyone here swaped there 520 chain for a 480? I have seen these chain and sprocket kits for sale and they say to go with a 480 chain for less drag.
Also what type and size rear tire is good for MX? I was figuring the turf tamers in like a 18x10.
What would you do first if in my shoes? My son has been riding for over a year and rides extremely well. He moves his body around on the quad to help in every way possible (traction, cornering, jumping). I must say I have honestly been impressed with how good he is doing, although my brother and I have spent a lot of time coaching him.
Anyhow, what's the next best step for his quad? Make it wider, to assist him in maintaining cornering speed? Suspension? But how much is it needed in the production class? In that class are the kids really getting a lot of air? Or give him some more power?
I can honestly say I have been losing sleep over this. The season begins in 4 weeks and I just want to make sure he can be competitive. So to all you parents out there help a Dad out. Like I've said in the past I have raced for 2 yrs. But it's easier to set up your own ride than someone elses.

520 or 480 in my opinion either one is fine as far as the drag not enough to make that big of o diffence.
We run tuff tammers they are fine. We also run 2 and a half inch wheel spacers on front and a durablue axle on back. Supension yes is a must get which ever your pocket can a afford. As far as big air some do some dont. Me and my boys have a saying "you cant go fast if your tires are not on the ground". Clutch and motor work on the lt also a must. I suggest to get in tough with lt80(jack) or hetrick racing they are both from PA. Their are a few things in my opinon that there is no need to change on a lt80 unless you just like spending money, remember this is just my opinion. No need for a bigger carb, no need to change the air box and no need for aarms or swing arms.

A inexpensive way to widen your lt 80 is wheel spacers front and rear. As far as tire size I use a 16" ITP holeshot on the rear. You will definitely want to modify the motor and clutch. How much is needed for the production class depends on how much you are willing to spend.

i would stick with the 520 chain also it isnt worth it to change we paid big bucks for 428 sprocket set and with no chain adj we ruined the back sprocket in no time.ebay allways has good oring kits for around 30 bucks thats what we run now.also would do the clutch mods makes a big diff.with the season getting started its gonna be hard to get any motor work done.also have to agree no need for fancy carb airbox exct.jus tkeep the water out of the motor and they will run good.

I recommend using 428 sprockets (donno where you got 480) and #40 chain. It is go-kart/industrial chain and you buy it in 10' lengths from MSC. I use it cuz: little rolling resistanse/cheap/and most of all, there are 1/2 links available. An important thing for chain adjustment. It fits the 428 sprockets just fine.
