Default Newbie question?

BTW, did you try cleaning filter? they clean up amazing well with a splash of gas, quickly followed by a good soap and water rinse. you'll need to do this often, even with a new one. and the cost of a new one will blow you away for a chunk of dense foam. I'd try cleaning old one first.

are you having starting problems? I'd highly recommend getting the optional pull-start. they're expensive from dealer, but someone else just posted that they saw one on ebay for $40, which is a good price.

Default Newbie question?

good news, you're no longer antonio... you're MD. better check the posts at FBK, cuz I'm outta control and I've been slamming you and PP with some of my best material.

I COULD be an expert on the Breeze if someone would reply to my Q's on it, either here, or on the yamaha forum.

Default Newbie question?

Thanks "Confused"! That helps a lot. I didin't know the filters where cleanable. I will definately give that a shot. I'm not really having starting problems. I just notice when I had everything torn apart that the plug was quite corroded and the gap seemed very large. The metal connector inside the plug cap was also broken. I was just going to replace the cap and the plug, clean the filter, and that's about it. Turns out I have been charging my battery the last couple days, and now it seems to be holding a charge. I still don't know if I trust it so I will probably still replace that as well.

All of this was necessary because I had to tear everything down to clean out filbert nuts which the mice had drug into the air intake and all the way up into the flywheel housing over the winter. Amazing how they get that stuff in there.

I will shop around for a battery now that I have a bunch more information and options. Thanks.

thats too funny. if you do a search in this forum for "mouse", you'll find an old topic I posted called, "Eeeeewww, a mouse lived in my LT80" (or something close to that). mine lived in the clutch cover area. I found old, dry dog food in there.

i bought a project '93 LT80. this is an excellent place to ask q's about them. I'd still try to find a pull start, if for no other reason, to save your starter. they are so rotten to change. another maintenance area is the belt drive face. there are rollers in there that need grease. they will eventually wear a groove in the movable face. I'd suggest getting a repair manual.

there is NO air/fuel mixture screw to adjust on these carbs, only an idle screw. plug gap is .6-.8 mm (.024-031 in).
if petcock stops working, a Yamaha Banshee one will work at 1/3 the cost.

on air cleaner, use a little gas and wring it out. then use soap and water, then rinse out with water really good and let dry. gas tends to eat the foam, but you'll need it to get it really clean. after this cleaning, if you ride dusty areas, then clean as needed, but soap and water only may work (no gas). I find the quick splash of gas always gets it cleaner. for soap, I use like a liquid laundry detergent. i guess dish soap would work too.

AFTER cleaning and drying filter, get a baggie and squirt in some foam filter oil. you should be able to buy this oil at any m/c shop, or even a walmart. rub the oil inside bag so both sides are lightly oiled. put the filter in the bag and squeeze and rub bag against it. this way your filter gets the oil, not your hand. and no dirt from your hand. A LIGHT coating of oil is all that is needed, not a dripping, saturated filter; it won't let enough air through. the light oiling helps pick up dirt. I'd say most folks overdo the oil.

ALSO, clean out the airbox really good,it'll prolong you having to clean filter again right away. mine got neglected and some dirt got inside engine and scored piston and cylinder, so I'd say this (regular filter cleaning) is your most important maintenance.

check chain. there's no adjustment for it, and yours may be worn by now. they're pretty slack when new, so old chain is probably really slack. there's info here for chain tensioners (cheap, homemade. Fishslab has a great one, and he'll send you pics). that's probably all for now. lube up your cables. both my font brakes cables were shot. easy to adjust rear brake cable.

good luck.

Default Newbie question?

On the filter oiling:: I recommend bel-Ray oil. It comes in a quart container and is thick.
Do like "the confused one" said and use a bag, but do indeed saturate the filter.
Spray can filter oil isn't very good and not rcommended by any motor builder I know.
ALTHO,,, I did use the spray stuff. I used to spray the sides of the air box to get the dirt to stick to it.

good ideas on spraying airbox.... I use the oil, never seen the spray. I thot saturated/dripping oil was too much... but I will ALWAYS defer to the expert, and ybfstuff, LT80 has forgotten more than any of us know about these lt80s.

Default Newbie question?

Hey Bubba. I was checking out you pics. Miranda's LT80 is almost exactly like ours. Same color scheme, only the people before us had a custome seat cover made, so it is a bit different. And, our lights are mounted on the fenders opposed to being right next to each other in the middle. Nice little ride. Does anyone have a real good source for picking up a repair manual?

Thanks to all for all the good information!!
