Pretty entertaining read so far. Both my boys off road life began at 3 1/2, youngest was 2 as a pasenger. I made them a mini 2 seater buggy, fully caged/padded. Powered by a 5hp chrysler 2 stroke, at first governed to go 8 mph, worked up to 23 by the time it was parked. They each started riding dirt bikes at age 4, fully covered from head to toe with gear. At first they were only allowed 1st gear on the mini trail. It was modified to fit them by lowering the seat 2" and I made a new triple clamp . Found the lowest handle bars I could and cut 2" out of the middle and welded them back together. The boys worst crashes happened later in life on 250's, youngest son did walk kind of slow for a while after over jumping the 25' table top in a mx race once. They are 17/19 now. I'm sure some will say I did it right and others will think i am crazy. Got news for you, your all right.

Sorry guys. Didnt mean to cause so much controversy with this question. I hate the thought of trying to explain to the wife that I need to trade in my sons new 2004 kfx50 on something else so that he can have a little bit more power. How easy is it to remove the restrictor plate or plates ?

You are way overreacting. My son is almost 7 and he can already power my Polaris 700 EFI through mud and up hills. He has a tough time getting up some of the steeper rockier hills (steering difficulty on rocks) but he manages. So for any whimps out there that think your kids can't handle it - guess again! BTW my 4 year old is just fine on my wife's Honda Rancher 350 ES. He still sometimes forgets to let go of the throttle, but has really crashed into anything yet (not that bad). As long as they have a helmet on what's the worst that can happen right? FYI - you can afford to add a plow, a winch and new tires to your quad as long as you are willing to share yours with the little one. (!gniddik tsuJ) <---For all who are boiling (not quite a palendrome).

I think with strict supervision, 4 years of age is fine at low speeds in the back yard. At low speeds they are virtually impossible to flip on a flat surface. It's no more dangerous for the rider than a powerwheels.
It's dad and the flower bed getting run over that I'd worry about!
