Default Mikuni VM16 carb problem

I've been trying to help a neighbor out... He has a Kasea Skyhawk 50. It's fine from 0 - 1/4 throttle.... but maybe half the time it will not allow you to go further. When it does let you go to full throttle, you can go for miles without so much as a stutter. When it bogs at 1/4 throttle, if you stay on it, it will just just bog until it stops and then cuts out.

I have put clean fuel in it, new spark plug, checked the fuel lines, gas cap vent is clear, plenty of oil, air filter look's fine. I also took the carb (Mikuni VM16) off and cleaned all the jets with carb cleaner and compressed air. I don't really understand how to check if the float is operating correctly, but it would seem that if you can run full throttle for miles... it should be ok.

I'm out of ideas.... anybody got a suggestion? Could the problem be a faulty auto choke?

thanks

If the needle is adjustable, you could lower it one notch and try it.

Has he altered the intake/exhaust? If the jetting is off (lean or rich), it'll fall on it's face.

It's pure stock from what I can tell. No carb or exhaust restrictors. The needle is adjustable and it's in the middle (3rd) notch.

Does it have a spark arrestor? If so, clean it. Then you might move the clip up (moves needle closer to the seat) to lean it out. You can test if it's lean by partially covering the air tube with your finger. Rich by removing the tube.

I don't think it has a spark arrestor... There is nothing removeable at the end of the exhaust... I'm assuming that is where the spark arrestor would be...

Yes, it should be at the end of the silencer if it has one. Just make sure nothing is clogging the flow.

Also, check for cracks around the intake boot.
