96 LT80
#1
Just wanted to post a quick question. I picked up a 1996 LT80 tonight. I let my son take it out for a few minutes after I got it home. It seems to run just fine but it has no top end to speak of. I have a 2000 Eaton that I bought for both my boys to mess around on and it will smoke the LT80 on the topend and takeoff both. The quad looks to be completely stock, so I was figuring maybe it needs some reeds to help the bottom end, but I was definitely concerned with the top end. Just guessing but it was revving pretty high and I bet it wasn't going anymore than 15-20 mph. Nothing sounded like it was slipping, just no speed. I haven't looked at the gearing or anything yet so any suggestions on where to start would be appreciated. I am going to look in the exhaust to see if the restrictor is still in it. What exactly does it have for a restrictor in the carburetor? I've read through quite a few posts on here over the last couple hours using the "search" function, but no one seems to address a quad that seems to run fine, but has no top end. Thanks in advance.

Hmmm well it doesn't sound like it's running right. Check the compression well over a 100Lbs? Could be the clutches are in need of serious maintenance, possibly the belt slipping? How long has it sat? It most likely needs some TLC. 15-20 isn't right. Your going to have to take some time to check things out.

That's the first thing I was going to look at, hopefully tonight. I'm kinda curious as to what may be happening exactly.... It's like the quad has no "high gear" to speak of. It just takes right off and revs up and it's done... no top speed. I was wondering about the performance limiters on this quad also. I know there may be a washer in the exhaust. Is there a restriction on the intake/carb side as well? Thanks for the replies so far.

Yesterday I took yet another clutch apart to find the grease hard as a rock and the rollers all flat. The hard grease limited the roller travel which makes it seem to be in one gear (so to speak).
Yes there is a brass ring that is between the carb slide and the top of the carb. If you can press the throttle all the way it's not there.
To check, simply unscrew the top of the carb and pull the slide out.

I've never had either LT look like that at all
