You will need a puller to remove the flywheel. You use the 2 holes that the fan bolts are in to pull it. When you use the puller, make sure you are pulling 100% straight. Other than that, it's easy.
At the 9 O'clock position of the stator is where the timing mark is. Just make sure you have the lines in the same place.

Neither, it is on the right, but on the end of the crankshaft under the plastic cooling shroud. Before assuming it is the stator though I would be making sure wiring is OK and testing stator. With red/white from stator disconnected, put an AC voltmeter between this wire from stator and earth. Run at 5000 rpm. you should get 28v or more. Much lower and stator is not good. If it is OK, and the wiring is good, the regulator is probably faulty.
